I have been getting netflix for roughly six months now.  I used to watch DVD's on my PS2 all the time, but like the last 7 or 8 movies I have gotten do not work.  The PS2 just doesn't even recognize the DVD's and it just goes right to the memory card options.  Since I used to use my PS2 to watch movies all the time in the past, I am guessing this could be some kind of setting issue.  I could not find anything relevant in the options menu.  Anyone know what the problem might be?  Most of the new movies I have gotten have been fairly new releases, are DVD's manufactured differently now that might cause the PS2 to not be able to read them?

Try playing some PS2 games to see if you're getting the same problem.  My first PS2 had issues with reading discs, and it's my understanding that it's a common problem due to dirt on the lens.

Never had any  issue with games.   I play games on it every day.  Just recent DVD's.

Mine started having problems with dual layer dvds, then started having issues with blue bottom ps2 games.  Then after it started giving me DREs on regular ps2 games, I finally took it apart and cleaned the lens.  Worked great after that.

Mines starting to crap out too. When I open the tray, there's a layer of dust on it. There's dust everywhere @_@. Can someone tell me how to open the PS2 phat so I can attack it with some dust off.

Interesting-I'm just starting to run into this as well, I thought it was just me. Maybe it's not-I have an old school PS2 as well, I'm saving up for a PS3, but until then, this is what I have.

Go to youtube and search for ps2 cleaning, there are tons of video tutorials on how to do it.  A written out version won't help you much.

I know this isn't particularly helpful to answering your question, but the PS2 is one of the worst DVD players out there - colors are way off and the picture bleeds terribly (although I can't speak for the slim revision - it's possible they improved it). As far as movies are concerned, you'd be better served going out and buying even a cheap $30 player.

You're ps2 is on it's way out. Cleaning it will buy you a couple of months. Start looking for a good deal on one. I have gone through 5 ps2 units in the last 10 years. the older the models were produced with alot of bugs. Right now I have 2 fats that have been playing for several years now, no problems. Slims are probably your best bet though. DVD's are your first sign, but soon your games will give you problems also. I am speaking from experience. I have been using ps2's almost every week for the last 10 years.

I've had my ps2 that I cleaned the lens on for 2+ years after cleaning the lens.  So you are wrong by saying that, at least in my case.

Pretty weird.  500 days of summer was the DVD I got the other day, and that worked fine.  So I guess it isn't a settings issue.  I guess it just cant read certain DVD's.

Not sure of the model.  It is not a slim.
