Yeah Dale Begg-Smith left Canada because there was an issue between him and Alpine Canada about running his internet business, not because he needed money. I'm still relatively young when it comes to paying taxes, and I've rarely run into a situation where I've thought "my taxes should be spent for item a, not item b", but once I'm older I'll most likely sing a different tune.
Only half of the $117m for own the podium was public funds, the rest came from corporate sponsers.. The $60M from the government was spread over 5 years. Making a comparison of $12 million a year to having any effect at all on the $200 billion a year spent on healthcare is absurd.
Of the games themselves governments paid the security cost (towards a $billion) and for the lasting infrastructure of the venues (~$600 million, which was relatively low as existing arenas were used). Of course spending that money doesn't really cost that much as much of it is in salaries that are income taxed, and the net incomes sales taxed as its spent). Most of the venue spending isn't' lost as the improvements and new buildings will provide benefits for decades. As a comparison, BC is going to spend almost as much on a new roof for BC Place (unrelated to olympics) as was spent on olympic venues.
For spending that money we get the benefit of the $1.8B operating budget being spent (generating taxes) in Canada that is covered by tv, sponsors and ticket sales. Plus 2 weeks of constant television exposure around the world, eg find the Brokaw piece on Canada NBC aired before the opening on youtube.
what beers do canadians drink? Commercials here would have us think you guys exclusively drink labatt blue and molson. The only Canadian beer i ever truly enjoyed was Unibroue Maudite

I was not aware of the 50% thing, so thanks for the stat, but I don't believe it's as absurd as you think it is. I work in a social services sector and I have family that works in the health care sector, but both are experience cutbacks. Not saying $60M should go there, just saying it shouldn't go to athletic funding (aside from special Olympics, I think that should be funded). I don't see the "revenue" being generated covering the cost of the Olympics, nor do I thin it will be enough to maintain the facilities in the long-run. The affects of the Olympics will benefit BC, it's not really going to do squat for the have not provinces like Ontario (excluding the GTA).

Canadian
I personally drink Keith's and Rickard's beers. I can't really stand anything else.

I run the gamut on a variety of cheap beers (being a university student, you have to budget your money accordingly!) If I were to splurge on a beer, it would be Rickard's or (gasp!) MGD. Goes down smooth! Molson Canadian has the best commercials, though. Criminole, I'll definitely have to try out that Unibroue Maudite, I've never even heard of it!
cheeznrice:Canadian
No my spell check doesn't recognize "Canadian" only "canadian" Rickard, that is a unique name. I like it.
CrazyCanucker14:Molson Canadian has the best commercials
That doesn't compensate for it's moose piss like taste.

My favourite beer is Rickard's White Ale w/orange slice. I know what you're thinking, but it's recommended by the brewer

I enjoy wheats, whites, and wits with lemon rather then Orange. The Whole "fruit in your beer is ghey." is the stupidest thing ever.
East Street Wheat with a lemon is god like
Gary Johnson For President 2012!
Molson and labatt combine for 80+% market share, though thats spread between dozens of brands including american ones under license to them
Labatt Blue, and Molson's Canadian, Bud, and coors light are the big 4

Is that local?
I really like the Surly Coffee Bender. I had it while I was down in Minneapolis for a Vikings game. I could only find it at one bar/pub though...and shesnrice didn't want to eat at the same place for four days
I never said Canadian was a good beer, I just said they have the best commercials lol. If anyone is into organic beer, try out Mill Street Organic, it's a beauty.
Interesting how we've shifted from an Olympic debate to the best beer. Anywho, USA-Finland game in 10 minutes!!

The two best goalies in the tourney, Kipper vs. Miller. Should be a good one I'm going for the US in this one.
