It would be interesting to see how much the US spends on its Olympic program; I can almost guarantee it's more than $117,000,000. Also, I wouldn't call it a "flop", since we're tied for 1st place for gold medals, which, in my opinion, is the only medal that counts. Interesting how we craft these games after the ancient Greek Olympians, and yet in that time only 1st place received prizes and prestige. They should move back to the system where the country that has the most gold medals wins the games, not the most medals in total.
You're definitely right, the Canadian men's team needs that gold a lot more than the US team does, in the same way that the US men's team needed the gold in Salt Lake, which Canada won instead. The pressure on athletes to win gold at home is tremendous, even more so when you're a professional athlete like the men's hockey teams. But I'm sure there will be millions of Americans watching the semi-final game "worrying aboot" it.
Well the 117 million was spent over a number of years. Also that 117 million is nothing compared to what the US government spends on their olympic athletes. I think the money we spent on athletics was excessive and there needs to be a lot more corporate sponsors, however our government does need to spend more on athletics than they did before own the podium.

Once again, you are mistaken here. Nobody ever expects the US to win gold at hockey. It is nearly like we never expect to win any soccer cups (except our local CONCACAF tournies). Now if the US had lost the basketball gold medal when the games were in Atlanta, that would be akin to Canada at these Winter Games.
All I Can Say Now is That our Men Better Step Up To The Plate and Bring Gold Home,Cause Our Women Just Showed Them Up

They better be drinking 40's and magnums too.

A Canadian that follows hockey would know not to 'expect' gold. I watch a lot of hockey, and I knew that Canada was not a lock for a medal in this tournament. Do I hope they win gold? Of course I do. But to expect a gold given the stiff competition is a stretch. Also, the basketball-hockey analogy is a little much. Canada does not dominate hockey the same way the USA dominates Basketball. If that were the case, Canada would win every World Cup, Spengler Cup, World Jr. and Olympic tournament we ever entered in, but we don't, because the competition across the countries is much stiffer than what the US faces in basketball.
I'm noticing a pattern:

I'm not sure their funds come directly from tax payers, I believe a lot of their funding is private funding. Regardless of where they get it, spending $120M on amateur athletes is BS when you're already running a deficit. Suspending Parliament for six weeks is even worse. What happened to all that social housing that was promised? Did they just shove all the homeless on a bus and ship them up north to make things appear 'clean'? Go Canada Go.
Haha, the snowboarder that won silver in snowboard cross also expressed his desire for a couple brews! Gotta love Canadians. I was enjoying a nice bottle of 'Canuck Beer' (no joke) when Canada beat Germany in the prelims.

Check out '5 Ring Circus' on Youtube if you want a disgusting perspective on the games. Talk about the money, homeless, diversion of funds and all that noise. I watched it for a geography class and it really shook my beliefs in Canada, but it's important to remember that everything has a bias. It was definitely a good watch, and it's important to remember that Canada was not the first, nor will it be the last, to undergo questionable methods in relation to the games. When you dumb it down, its ridiculous for a country to pay millions of dollars for hosting a 2 week party. A far cry from the Olympic games of old.

Thanks, I'll have to check this out when I'm at home
cheeznrice: I hope we don't win. Athletes that medal get more of my tax money. Bronze medalists get 10k, silver medalist gets 15k and gold medalists get 20k. It was nice to hear that the government said they won't be able to meet the OTP's funding demands...no f*****g s**t, you can't keep cutting funding from relevant services just to fund people who don't want to actually work...I think they'd cost me less money if they just went on welfare

The problem is that if the government gives them nothing, they'll discover how easy it is to change nationalities for a country that is willing to pay them (say hi to Greg Rusedski (UK), Dale Begg-Smith (Aus) and a few others). Then the population will whine that the government gives nothing to the athletes and it makes them go away.
It's politics, people will whine whenever the government spends money. And they'll whine when they don't spend anything. You have to be a masochist to become a politician.

I'm fine with that. Put that $120M back in to Canada. Address health care/educational issues. Explain to me why I haven't been able to find a family doctor since I moved in 2006 and yet the government deems it necessary to cut funding for social/educational services in favour of amateur athletes...
Dale Begg-Smith doesn't need funding, he's a millionaire.
