Brodeur had a really weak game, I thought; 15 shots, 4 goals against? I think Brodeur was getting sports mixed up; he was swimming around on one goal, and playing baseball on another. USA is good, but I don't see them winning a medal. Canada can definitely use the extra game against Germany to get into sync. We're getting to the point where another loss spells the end for any team. Switzerland could beat Belarus, then shut out USA and win 1-0; US is out, Switzerland is in. Anything could happen, which is why you can't count out any team in these Olympics.

while everything you said is true, i'm merely basking in all the glory that is Americas dominance in sports. If the swiss beat us i will be a sad panda. Maybe US doesnt win gold, but I see us winning a medal.

Still more than Canada will get.

Anything is possible. At this point, I can see Slovakia, Czechs and Finland win medals while no "big" team wins a medal, and I wouldn't be surprised. It's all about goalies, and even the Slovaks with Halak could have a chance (and that would eventually make life in the Montreal Canadiens' crease quite interesting!).
On that, I agree that Brodeur had a fairly bad night, not because he was extremely bad, but because he was careless. 2 of the Americans goals were direct results of his careless clearing attempts.

LOL...that was good.
I'm sure Marx would pay double what the Caps pay Ovechkin. He would like us all to distribute wealth to his filthy comrade.
I think the Olympic spirit is about athletes that represent countries to win and get the most medals -- hence all the medal counts, flag waving, national anthems, history recaps, etc etc. As an alternative to war, the Olympics is a peaceful way to say "yeah we pretty much rock and you don't...haha" So much overt nationalism in the games. Not saying good or bad.
I think Canada took a gamble with that marketing slogan -- they were betting on having at least an average Olympic medal turnout and the slogan would have fit...it's just that they got very unlucky with the medal count and weather. And then there is the event production, which is in the shadow of Beijing that raised the bar so high -- seriously who can compete with thousands of guys banging drums with lights in them? The death of the luger royally sucked b/c they could have done some things that maybe have prevented that.
Finally, USA is having one of those special years with the medal count knocking everyone off their usual marks. If anything, I'm more surprised at how poorly Russia is doing in the winter olympics...Moscow should be interesting in 2014.

Congrats to the US team, it was a well-played game by both sides. I don't think any rational observer (okay, that excludes a lot of sports fans) was really that surprised by the outcome. Sure, we hope for our team to win, but in this kind of tournament anything can happen and goalies are key. Look at what the Swiss did to Canada too, almost beat us on the back of a hot goalie.
Frankly, Brodeur shat the bed last night and shouldn't see any more ice in this tourney. Let's see what Luongo can do. I think we can beat the Russians -- they're top-heavy, not much depth, and their goalies are beatable. We'll see what happens from there.
As much as our goalies were hyped up, it seems they're our Achilles heel now. Luongo showed in the playoffs last year (7 goals against in elimination game) that he may not be a big-game goalie. I hope he finds a way. Go Canada!

None of Canada's goalies did well the last few weeks leading into the Olympics. All of them had inflated GAA's, poor save %'s and the only one with a winning record was MA Fleury who has scored more goals in international play than the other two combined I'm with you on Luongo though...can't be much worse than Marty.
The Olympics are almost always won with goaltending, Hasek in 98, Brodeur in 02 and Lundquist in 06. He may be the best goalie in history, but Marty isn't the goalie he was in 2002. Miller has been playing like a beast this season, so I'd be surprised if the US didn't medal...plus, they have some Canadian content which always helps. Well said. Granted, the US usually has strong Olympics (the massive funding they put forth helps, too) but they are having an uncharacteristically outstanding year. One of those instances where an outside shot at a medal ends up having a phenomenal performance and takes a spot on the podium. Canada never gets that lucky :(
criminolelawyer: Hows it feel to get worked in your own sport by your big brothers to the south? That has got to be some kind of embarrassing. So much for that whole "take the podium". Atleast you'll always have a place as our top hat. :)

Brodeur is still good, but he is not the goaler he was in 2002, and he doesn't have a team that plays with him 82 games a year and knows all his quirky plays. Maybe batting a puck mid-air is common in Devils' games, but to most others, it was a WTF moment.
I have a gut feeling that they'll stick with Brodeur - it's definitely his last Olympics, all 3 goalies were not stellar prior to the Olympics and Brodeur can definitely be a game clincher on a good night. I think they'll use the game against the Germans to build his confidence and be prepared for the Russians.
On the other hand, they will be playing 2 games in 2 nights. I wouldn't be surprised to see Fleury against the German and Brodeur or Luongo against the Russians (should they make it that far). I would stick with Luongo against the Russian (as a personnal choice, not as what I think they'll do).
Goaltending for Canada is the Achilles' heel mostly because there's gonna be intense pressure on the goalie to prove he was the right choice, as points could be made for all 3 goalies right now. Most other teams have 1 stellar goaler that is a no brainer, and 2 obvious backups.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to get the games on CTV as TBay Television changed affiliates (stupid CanWest Global), but I don't know if the blame is entirely on them. There are some holes in Stevie Y's team that are getting exposed and I don't quite think people expected it. They took too many players that had really solid last years, who are playing poorly this year and not enough guys that have played well this year.
If they exit early I guess people can say "Why wasn't Green named? Or Stamkos?" considering they seem to be offensively stunted (excluding the Norway game). They left Crosby off in '06, I can't believe they made the same mistakes again. There seems to be no chemistry at all. I don't know how much of that lies with the players and the coaching staff.
