Hexpane: killmak: Wow, that is a really old computer. There is no making that thing run fast. It is best to get yourself a new computer rather than try to salvage such an old one. Actually a clean wipe and fresh install of XP would probably make it run fine for "normal" use. For gaming, forgeddaboudid

I recommend doing this about once a year. It's also great for getting rid of the crap you didn't really use.
There was a news story last year about Geeksquad stealing *** from a *** star they were at the home of working on a PC. They offered to "come back for free" because they were copying all her files.
Basically geeksquad is like any other contract employee at comcast or any other best buy or target worker. Some guy off the street in an ugly uniform.
He might be smart, or he might be a felon scammer or a total idiot. Impossible to predict or control. I've had some comcast techs who knew there stuff, others who were clearly high.
They book 4 hour windows. One dude was in and out of my house in 20 minutes and gave me the "nothing I can do" rap about the constantly dropping internet connection.
I left for work later and saw him chilling in his van smoking cigs killing time. Needless to say I complained to comcast many times. They could never fix it, likely a bad local router or something. Moved houses a few years back and everything is fine now (still not as fast as promised but at least the DNS servers work now)
Comcast DNS is so bad some guy set up an app to address it and to route your connections around comcast DNS to avoid their horrid service.
Like most cable companies, they have a "local monopoly" the only other option is non cable like Uverse or DSL garbage
I-Weapon-X: enigmagirl414: killmak: As much as I like laptops I would rather spend my money and build a monster of a PC than spend the same money and pick up a half decent laptop. but monster PCs are expensive, and dont they consume more power than a laptop. one of the reasons im getting a laptop is since its a space saver. pending the laptops you are looking at, you are actually going to spend less on a comparable PC as far as a space saver goes, towers don't really take up that much space and unless you REQUIRE the portability, you're going to find that the PC is going to function much better than the laptop (now this may not necessarily be true pending which laptop you purchase, but if you are citing expense it probably is)

Well, i dont require any portability. i just want something that will run better than my seven year old piece of junk =\
its a pain to do a clean wipe though, since i dont have an external/portable hard drive. and i STILL dont know what the difference is between the two D:

While not an exact definition--just figure an external needs to be plugged into the wall and a portable is fine on usb power alone.

Ohhh. so is a portable like a giant flash drive?

To the extent that it has a USB plug and stores data ... yes.

its the cheapest, easiest solution assuming you own XP and have the original install CD or original key
yeah i have the original XP disc. but i have yet to get a portable =\

As others have stated yes a fresh install will help speed it up and bring it back to where it was when it was new however a computer that old will have major limitations. If you arent broke and are getting sick of your old computer then there is no reason not to pick up a new one. You should be able to get a decent computer with a lcd monitor for around $500. If you spent the same amount on a laptop you would be getting a pretty crappy laptop. If you dont need portability then get a desktop computer.
