I'm as dumb as they come when it involves PCs...
What is considered "top of the line" as far as graphics cards?
Any/all help is appreciated!
Two top of the line cards would be the gtx 295 which is about $500-$600 and the HD 5970 which is about $650-$700. These cards are overkill though so basically the card you should get will depend on what games you plan on playing and how much you are willing to spend.
Top of the line is nice but it's always overkill and always expensive. I picked up a GTX 285 2GB for about $325 on Amazon back in......October I think and I can play anything with all settings maxed, games look freakin awesome. Now your other components (CPU, RAM, etc.) will matter as well but for gaming the video card is where ya wanna splurge a little.
How much are you willing to spend?
Give us your system specs and how much you're willing to spend for a graphics card. Shortly after that we will be able to bombard you with suggestions.
Check out my musical endeavors!
Buying a top of the line card would be a waste of money since most PC games are console ports or lo-res indie games these days. As long as you have 512 mb Vram you're set for the rest of this console generation and for a good chunk of next generation as well. You can get one for less than $50 on newegg.

If you are playing some of these newer games on a $50 graphics card you will be having some major frame rate problems and you will not be able to play any of them on higher settings. If you arent going to be playing games on highersetting then you might as well play them on a console.

Not sure if this is all you'll need to know, but here are my specs:

A $100 card can max out any game at 60+ fps except Crysis.
MAybe I'm thinking around $100 then, lol...

Do you know what your power supply is?
For $170 the 5770 is a good card right now and it supports DX11. I still like my 8800 GTS though.
for 300 dollars buy the 5850. if anything less go for a 4890.
Yeah, you have to think about not just your power supply but your motherboard because you may or may not have the right slot for the card you consider.
