I've always been able to ship my xbox 360 games as "large envelopes" using USPS's First Class mail and a bubble mailer, as it matches the measurement requirements. This costs about $1.50~, I can't remember exactly. Between here and eBay, I've probably done this about 20 times without a hitch. However, I just got a PM from someone who I shipped an X360 game(case + game) to and they are saying that the Post Office is saying I incorrectly shipped a "package" as a "large envelope". The guy says they want another $3.29 in order for them to release the game to him. That means they are wanting to charge me the cost of a Priority mail envelope. Now, I asked him to send me a picture of the post slip as a verification method, and I'm waiting for a response.

I suppose my question is this: am I supposed to have been sending it "package" this whole time and I've been getting away with it, or is someone trying to get a free happy meal on my dime?

When I ship via PayPal "Package/Thick Envelope" is the same option, so I am a bit confused about your problem as well.

Package and thick envelope are actually separate things. PayPal will always make you pay package rate instead of thick envelope.

There is a thickness limit for thick envelope. I don't know how much exactly, but as far as I remember some games did not fit.

But the price difference was not that much...

Package is the correct way to go.  Letter/Large letter isn't the correct choice, because a game is rigid, which no matter the size, automatically ups it to a package status.  Well done, slipping it by them so far, and the money saved until now, though.  Smile

First, I will say it is not likely you are being scammed, I have had this happen to me and heard about it happening to several others.

What ends up happening is that for the USPS to add DC to your mailing, based on the dimensions, it must be sent Priority, it cannot be sent 1st class. Now 99.9% of us skirt these rules because we are just throwing it in a box, and the sorters don't care about specifics.

Every now and then, there is either am audit of mail, or maybe even an overzealous employee who will catch it and report it. If it happens at the origination post office it is supposed to be returned to the sender(my scenario) but I am assuming if it is not caught till the destination, then what happened to you is more likely.

Asking for a picture of the slip is not an unreasonable request and it will help to ensure both sides are satisfied, but likely, this is just a bad luck case.

Most of what Coras said is correct.  You don't need priority mail to get Delivery Confirmation, though.  You do need to have it as a package though, to use it with First Class mail.  If you send First Class as a letter/envelope, and get Delivery Confirmation, then it should be bumped up to priority.

if you use the machine inside the post office it wont allow you to add Delivery confirmation on a letter/envelope unless its on a priority package which is why sometimes I am forced to send priority at night on days have to wok

This (requiring priority for dc) is not my experience at my post office (with my first Goozex trade). I purchased an 8x10 Caremail envelope, put my game in it, addressed it appropriately, and took it to the counter with a delivery confirmation slip filled out. The person behind the counter mailed it first class with delivery confirmation. As for why they would leave notice as seen in my screenshot, beyond me :)

If I select package from the machine at the post office it allows me to do DC and first class. Last time I tried it was like $2.90 or something like that. The problem is you have to be creative to get the label it prints out to fit along with your address and return label. Normally I will use paypal instead.
