Comparing modern RPG writing to classic all time greats like FO1 and Chrono Trigger will just make panda sads.

I WISH FO3 had the worst writing of any RPG in 2008, but unfortunately it's one of the top.   Blame the industry for not making quality RPGs in bunches anymore.

I can guarantee that the writing in FO3 is going to be 10000000x better than the writing in FF13. that nonsense looks like it was designed by Vince McMahon

Mass Effect has better characters and better voice acting.  The main plot is not that much better than FO3s main plot, but yes, better.  But in ME1 we are talking again about one of the greatest SPace RPGs ever made.   No shame in being slightly worse than one of the best.

Again it's not like I think FO3 writing is mind blowingly good, I've just played a lot of RPGs new and old, and objectively, it's top 10% of next gen RPGs.   Borderlands?  I would barely even call that writing, more like MST3K style comments.

Fallout 3 is my favorite game of this generation, thus far.  It did have it's faults though.  I hope New Vegas has a more involved and longer main storyline, more weapons, better shooting mechanics when you're not in VATS, and more allies that you team up with along the way (Fawkes was awesome).

It's being made by Obsidian Entertainment which includes many of the people from the original fallout. Not least of which including the lead developer Chris Avellone.

It's a day 1 buy for me.

I will compare to one of the best RPGs on the PS3  Valkyrie Chronicles.

Comparing FO3 to there will be blood will let everyone down, but compare to any JRPG of the past 3 years and it stands shoulder to shoulder.

SUch is the state of game writing and why something like ME2 stands out so much, so dramatically.  Nothing else comes close.

 

 

Is this a standalone? I have not read that it's not an expansion, but it helps to make sure :)

I liked fallout 3...until i thought about it. In retrospect I hate that game. For all of its upside I cant look past the glaring flaws present in bethesda's games.

God I'm tired of bringing this up. Yes FO3 is one of the best RPGs of the last few years which haven't had anything Black Isle or Troika quality except some NWN2 modules. That's nothing to brag about. FO3's writing is terrible and comparing it to Oblivion and Drakensang and whatever the hell else there is will never change that. It's not even leading in the special olympics race that the RPG market has become. Also, Borderlands is not an RPG unless all that you need to make something an RPG is numbers and grinding,

On a more related note, I didn't get all that far in FO3 before I stopped playing it.  I just couldn't get into it so this will probably be a pass for me.

What I meant was, I'm tired of you bringing this up. Every time someone says FO3 has bad writing, you're like "Yeah it's bad but it's not as bad as it could be! You shouldn't compare it to something good because it makes it more obvious how bad it is!" as if that's some sort of defense. FO3's writing isn't just bad compared to the original Fallouts, it's bad compared to mediocre RPG writing like Dragon Age and its even bad compared to FF7. Considering the series pedigree of excellent writing (non-cannon spinoffs notwithstanding) this is inexcusable. No matter how much you lower your standards it isn't going to make it a good RPG, so stop doing it.

No, I am not "like" that.  Don't put quotes on something and attribute it when it is not a quote.

Try and relax, just because others hater levels of rage do not match your own, no need to blow a gasket.  

I've already posted what FO3 should be compared to, and you are hating again on DAO and everything that is not in the top 10 games of all time.

To call the writing "inexcusable" is  a generic insult at the devs/writers that serves no purpose other than to vent rage.

 

There you go again. Well just because FO3 looks slightly better than shit when compared to other shit doesn't mean it isn't shit. If everyone had such low standards then even Big Rigs: Over the Road racing would be good for what it is. I mean, Hitler might not have been the nicest chap, but that's because you're comparing him to great leaders like George Bush and Richard Nixon. Compared other WWII German dictators he was a pretty swell fella.
