I have that same reaction before, "If you can afford a $60 game and a $400 console and $75 year online" saying you can not afford a HDTV is a lie, the truth is they just dont want to afford one, but are more than willing to spend $60 on a 4 hour game.

The counter to this argument is often "someone gave me the XBOX" or "I already had a perfectly good SDTV" or "the HDTV is in the other room" or "I live in college" etc...

Personally I'd rather play a console on a PC monitor than a big SDTV if I had to choose.  And PC monitors are cheaper than SDTVs and everyone has one or more laying around the house.

Every TV I have owned, besides my 15" TV I got for Christmas about 5 years ago, have been my parent's hand me downs as I don't have the money to upgrade to HDTV at this time, hopeful I will by the end of the year. When they got a 32" SDTV, I got their console TV. Once they upgraded to a 32" HDTV, I got the 32" SDTV and that is what I have been gaming on for the past 2 years.

I did my first playthrough of ME2 on a 19 inch SDTV in my college dorm room. Couldn't read jack unless I got up real close to the screen. The game is still entirely playable without the legible text, but it's really something they should have thought about. I know games like Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts have had patches to fix text issues like this on SDTVs so I really hope Bioware will be able to fix this.

Just cause I have a good financial situation I'm not gonna sit around and tell people that they should be able to afford a HDTV.  I remember growing up with my family and being broke, and only getting a system or game for christmas, and get a tv whenever they had enough income tax return to pay for most of a new one.  So yeah, if someone gets a 360 as a present, or something, I'm not gonna jump their ass and say "OH YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO PAY FOR A TV TOO HURRRR".   Just my 2 cents.   Hopefully bioware does something to help out the SD crowd though.

I play on a HDTV. On my old SDTV I never had problems reading text on any games as long as I was using component cables. The sides of the image were always cut off though. Liek if the text goes all the way across teh screen, a few words might get cut off. Most of the time peices of the GUI like part of the radar were cut off too. Component cables also made the image slightly off center for some reason.

Eh.... I still game on a SDTV and personally don't it's worth hundreds of dollars to have something that just looks a little better. Sure it would be nice, but I really have more important things to put my money towards than to replace a tv that is working perfectly.

I agree with the spirit of this post, but lets be realistic here.

ME 2 is a $60 game.  It's hard to believe anyone who says they are "poor" can buy a brand new $60 game on day 1 AND pay $75 year for XBL AND pay $400 for a console, $50 for a controller,  etc... but can't afford a $500 TV that will last 3-5x as long as the console.

TVs will last a lot longer than a console, and work with more devices and more people can use them etc... So it's not that they can't afford one, they simply don't want to buy one.  They don't consider HD a priority.

That is their choice, they are free to do that, but it's not because they are "poor".  If you are truly poor you are not buying the best brand new videogame on expensive HD consoles or giant Gaming PCs

Unless you are not on your own and depend on gaming as gifts from others, the math does not add up.

Then again when I was a kid I bought my own videogames.  I gotta say, that $60 for a SNES game HURT bad on paychecks back then, but I had to make sacrifices.   I didn't have a car, so no gas bill.  If I bought an SNES game, no eating out for 2 weeks until the next check.

You can buy a PC monitor for $150 and get HD out of the box.

I like how you are artificially inflating your numbers there.  First off, you are saying somone  is paying 75 bucks for XBL, which is nowhere near that price for a year, let alone a requirement for anyone.  I know tons of people that don't have paid subscriptions.  Same goes with the controller.  So stop trying to pull those out of your ass.   You are just wanting to douche it up in this thread, which seems to be your thing, so go with it I guess.   Point is, not everyone can afford it, no reason to go dickwaving saying "oh you should blah blah blah."

That's what I did. 22" LCD with an HDMI input supporting 1080p. Had it on sale for $100, though. That's just what I use when the main TV is taken.

However, I still agree that some people might be able to save up and drop the $300 on an xbox360 and ME2, but not be able to afford a new TV. Because, the same people making the argument that they could afford if it they really wanted to, would use the same argument when someone complains that they don't get 5.1 surround sound out of their TV (you could afford a 5.1 speaker system + receiver if you wanted to afford it!)

So from Bioware's perspective, I don't really mind that they didn't make it more SDTV friendly, as these systems are primarily intended for HDTV play. However, the system is compatible with SDTVs, and the game should be too (and it is, even if it's not convenient).

Wow here come the personal insults out of no where because I listed prices?

I will refrain from childish insults and instead post facts.

XBOX 360 - $300 + tax, was $400 not too long ago.  PS3 was $500 a few years ago

Mass Effect 2 - $60

XBL is indeed not $75 anymore, but it WAS when I had it a few years back $50 per year

XBX wireless adapter $100

XBOX play and charge kit - $20  actually listed at $64 for combo pack but can be found discounted today for $49 on amazon

XBOX controller $40  thats $60 bucks if you want recharge, MORE than what I listed, put the

Do the math kid, I stand by my statement if you can pay $60 for mass effect 2 and every other game you buy, you can indeed "afford" HDTV

The FACT is you simply don't want one.

UNLESS you are not the one paying for the gear, there is no excuse other than "I dont care about HDTV" which is perfectly fine.

But don't cry poor on a next gen console w/ the hottest and best games out there, that's nonsense.

Exactly, any of us who bought our own consoles and games make our own decisions on what we want to buy.  True poor people don't buy HD consoles and brand new videogames.

I have a 5.1 system, I bought it 5 years ago for like $300.  Now I could buy a HDMI 7.1 audio system, but I chose not to at this time.   I'm not going to cry poor while playing an XBOX elite,...

I just don't feel like spending the money on the upgrade.   HDTVs right now are cheaper than good 7.1 audio systems

HDTVs are cheaper now than they ever have been.

Also any PC monitor is HD out of the box, you don't need to buy anything to game in HD if you have a computer

Um, I have a fine HDTV thank you very much.   You are the one here slinging out numbers of stuff that people don't even need making up an inflated price list, then you get upset when I call you out on in?  Way to go.

Your pricing and rationale is more of an insult than anything he said to you....

Newsflash: Not everyone that has an Xbox 360, let alone is a user on a gametrading website in which we use games as currency,  has thousands or even hundreds of dollars laying around to buy an HDTV.

Another reason I've avoided the HD era is because I've seen first-hand how badly the wrong type of HDTV can cause lag in videogames where timely twitch reactions are critical.

Expecting a developer to accomodate those of us who still use SDTVs by, gasp, coding the text in the game to be bigger for those of us who play on smaller TVs isn't that outlandish of a request.  Trying to read the text in Deadrising is absolutely brutal.
