Meh the 3D was cool. the story was boring as all hell. The movie dragged on until the final 15 minutes. I'd give it a C

Maskim:

I know it's supposed to be amazing, but I just have zero interest in this movie.

I saw previews... didn't want to see the movie.

I inevitably saw the movie - it was awesome.

The problems with this movie is not that it was a "rip-off' of other movies, but that it was completely predictible from begining to end. That's what made it so boring - lack of supprise. The special effects were fantastic, but that wasn't enough to carry the movie (the story sure wasn't helping). Why couldn't Cameron just make another big action movie with big explosions and real actors (like he used too back in the day)?

Cameron should make True Lies 2. Then I think I could forgive him for Avatar.

Yes, visually the movie is very entertaining. However, as soon as I got out of the theatre and actually started thinking about the story some things started to bug me. The two biggest things that ruined it for me was: 1) the over simplicity of the pure and innocent victim vs. the totally evil aggressor, the entire plot was such a thoughtless and one dimensional view of consumer capitalism against environmental preservation with no complexity to either side...no explanation as to why the humans were there and why they needed the 'amazing' new ore, it was just so full of Hollywood liberalism forced on the audiences throught without any attempt at actually exploring the issues and showing the complexity of what is involved in environmental vs. industrial issues that we are facing currently.

 2) This is perhaps the real killer for me...but did no one else even feel the slightest discomfort at seeing the American military get gunned down at the end in such an overly 'holier than though' way? Granted, these aren't 'real' military, they are now mercenaries, but the entire movie spends time calling them marines, dressing them like marines, and it is clear that Cameron is intending them to represent the American military...and then getting the audience to cheer when they are slaughtered. Never mind the fact that it is clear the humans represent the U.S. and the plot can be seen as an allegory of problems of U.S. involvement in international politics for the sake of gleaning natural resouces (unobtainium=oil, rainforests etc.) and that this was done so poorly as to make me laugh, but I just can't stand the way he represents the military as nothing but a bunch of meat-heads that can't think about anything but killing...and then we're supposed to be glad when we see our own soldiers get killed? No wonder the movie has made so much money overseas, I can just imagine people from areas with anit-U.S. sentiments getting a kick out of that part of the film.

I saw the movie the 3D, and had a lot of fun, but I agree that under closer scrutiny it's not as strong a movie, like Star Trek. I say Avatar was my 3rd favorite movie of 2009, with District 9 and Up making up my 1st and 2nd respectively. That could change when I see Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moon, The Hurt Locker and Avatar could have to settle for my sixth favorite.

That's the first description of this film that has given me even the most remote desire to see it.

What gets me is why does everyone have to over analyze every movie made now?  What happened to going to a movie and just enjoying it or not liking it, without a 2 page essay about it?  The internet has spoiled us.

I dunno guys. I think you've all lost touch with your inner child. The part of you that doesn't feel the need to over-analyze everything. The part of you that knows that sometimes well told story is better than a unique story. The part of you that can sit back and marvel at the spectacle in front of you without feeling the need to rip it apart later because it wasn't perfect. Was Avatar perfect? No. Is any movie? No. I'm going out on a limb here but I'm gonna say if you can't at least enjoy Avatar for the sheer visual splendor, then that innocent part of you must have died a long time ago . . . Its liking ripping apart Mario Galaxy or something. Is the story breathtaking and deep? No. Is it supposed to be? No. Does that make Mario Galaxy a bad game? No.

At first I did enjoy Avatar for the "sheer visual splendor." In fact, I tell people to see the movie just because of how amazing it looks, despite the fact that I don't think it's the best movie evar.

But the visuals didn't keep me from almost falling asleep and constantly checking the time. A good story and interesting characters could've done that but the story was uninteresting and all the characters were unlikeable.

Just saw it a couple days ago, and liked it quite a bit. Best movie ever? I certainly wouldn't go that far, for me anyway. I agree the story wasn't too original and in fact has been done numerous times, unfortunately making it fairly predictable. But the thing is, I still think it's a pretty good story. Just because something's been done before doesn't mean it's bad. Dances With Wolves wasn't the first either, does that make it a bad movie? Sure, I wish there were more elements that separate Avatar and made it more unique other than the visuals. I'm sure I would've enjoyed it even more if there had been, but the lack thereof didn't make me enjoy it any less.

Speaking of the visuals...let's just say I was in awe pretty much the entire movie. Breathtaking. And yes, I saw it in 3D.

I think HighWindXIX said it well. If you just let your inner child run loose and not be so critical, and let the visual spectacle of it envelop you, you'll enjoy Avatar a hell of a lot more. I honestly don't see how anyone could be bored watching this movie. I will definitely watch it again.
