  • The Bigs
  • Blitz: The League II

+1 for these two

The Bigs is an awesome baseball game on the Wii, one of the best of all time IMO.  Pitching is just too much fun.

And if you don mind violence, Blitz : The League II is tons of fun.  The injuries make you cringe and the game actually has a story.  I grabbed it in a discount bin for $10 a year or so ago and loved it.

fun indeed but both of them are still pretty much rooted in the general mechanics of the sports

I suppose, but I don't see how you can even have a sports game that ignores the mechanics of sports.  You could play either one of these without knowing much about either sport.  They are far from complicated and "sim-like".  You don't need to be a sports fan by any means and I feel any gamer could figure them out.  If you can play Mario, you can play Blitz, and if you can play an RPG, you can play The Bigs; IMO.

I guess I may have a different interpretation here, but are we looking for a sports game that ignores the rule(s) of the sport and doesn't require any knowledge of what the ball is and who has it and what to do if you don't have it?

Played the demo of NHL 10. I loved it and want it but ive been 5 in the queue for ever. They need to put the price up to 800 or 850 so people will trade it.

A couple good ones from the PS2/GC/Xbox era are Sega Soccer Slam and the NHL Hitz series. Both have fewer players than the sports they're based on, ignore most of the rules, and generally are a lot of fun.

The only "sports" game I will even touch is NFL Blitz. I have not tried the anything past the N64/PS1/Dreamcast versions, so I don't know how well those play.

Sounds like either Base Wars or Baseball Simulator 1,000 but those were both for NES.  I can't think of one that was out for Genesis.

no it was called Super Baseball 2020 - japanese import port apparently, although that title doesn't sound quite right, only a home run if you hit it to center, right and left were covered by plastic so it would bounce off, and you could be thrown out.  that's the kind of arcade sports game that needs to be made along with the sims, sci-fi, robots and crazy rules like Blurnsball in Futurama.

Blitz: The League II

Another +1 for this guilty pleasure game.

Any game that awards you a trophy/achievement for rupturing 10 scrotums is doing something right...or at least doing something disturbing.

I get sympathy pains from some of the injuries... some of the ways they show knees blowing out are just cringe-inducing, along with the aforementioned ***-rupturing, and others...
