My Xbox Elite just red ringed. This is my second xbox console. And because i bought it second hand i'm sure microsoft is just going to tell em to pay them or to go F*&$ my self.

So i'm not scared to open up my systems to clean them and such. (modded a few as well) So i'm just going to rip it open and fix it myself. But i have no idea witch fix is the right one.

For example:

There's the penny trick witch is to put pennies under what i think is the ram instead of the cheap sticker heat sinks.

There's the xclamp fix. and there are variations on this fix as well

There's also like a few hundred kits for sale on ebay to fix the problem.

My point is their are way too many options and fixes and i have no idea what would work. And wondering what some one else might have done to fix their system. and maybe provide a link or two.

FYI my xbox froze during game play a few times. Then finaly red ringed. Tried all the tricks online that don't damage the system  or require opening it.

I would suggest contacting Microsoft first to see if they actually will fix it for you. I don't know how you jumped to the conclusion that you would have no other option but to rip it open. Its worth a try to see if they will simply repair it for you first.

I got it used. I doubt M$ will let me return it. Worked fine for almost 2 years (I think i've had it for 2 years)

I have nothing agaist the systems. My Xbox (ORGINAL) Works like a dream.(Softmodded mine and use it as an incredible media player) But the 360's got some big problems. So from what i can see i have error code E18. Something's overheating inside.

I'm thinking about buying small ram coolers i saw on ebay for the 360 and also doing the xclamp fix.

I was just wondering if anyone here had the same problem and tried fixing it the same way as i'm preparing to do.

I am going to call M$ and see if i can have it fixed under warranty. But if not i'm not going to pay the 30$ to have it shiped to them, then pay 99$-130$ to fix it and then have to pay an other 30$ to be shipped back to me. A new Xbox costs 200$ why would i pay that much to get my used system running again when a few washers , screws and a little hard work can fix it even better(according to the internet anyways).

All 360s have a red ring warranty for at LEAST 3 years from manufacture date. There are many stories of MS covering all red rings now, no matter the manufacture date. CALL 1-800-4MYXBOX.

The Elite was released in April of 07', so even if you bought it second-hand, it will still be covered.  The RRoD is covered on a 3 year warranty.  HOWEVER, if you've opened the case already, you're hosed.  As soon as you break that seal all bets are off.

To my knowledge; If your console isn't 3 years old Microsoft's extended warranty covers the red ring as long as the warranty seal has not been broken or tampered with.

Also make sure you register the console to your name before contacting customer service. If they ask you whether or not your console was plugged into a surge protector say NO.When they ask you if you used a inter cooler system say NO. You should be golden.

I lost count on how many consoles I've gone through Redring or E74 with. I understand your frustration.

They will accept it if its over 3 years old and it is a RRoD.  All you have to do is call that number, and if they tell you it is over 3 years old, keep hounding them.  My friend did this on his release day premium 360 and got it fixed last month just cause he kept them on the phone, asked for a supervisor, and made a big deal out of it.

Send it back to Microsoft if you can...I"ve got 2 360s with the x-clamp "fix" and it's a bandaid at best.  Both have gotten the RROD after having the fix done.  There isn't any guarantee on how long the fix will last after you've done it and yours should still be under warranty.

Elite's aren't invincible, in fact most are as vulnerable as older consoles.

Its all about the chipset, and MS has been taking the guts of old consoles (as old as 2007 manufacture date) and putting them in Elite shells.  Its been reported that the new holiday bundles actually contain the older Falcon chips, at least a good amount of them.

Before you buy an Elite, you should check the hole in the box where the serial number is (this is where the store will scan it).  Check the voltage.  If it is 12v ------ 1A, then you're good, with the Jasper chips.  If its 12v ------- 16.5, 14, or something other than 1A, its an older chipset.

The MW2 Edition/Resident Evil editions would have been made fresh, and therefore contain the better chipset.  Just check it out if you plan on buying a newer console.  The "fixes" are never stable for more than a few months, if you're lucky enough to get that from them.

An Elite is just as likely to malfunction.  My 360 that died was an elite.  The day after it came back it died again.  Elite doesn't mean it's better, at all.  I just means it's black.

And before anyone says anything i know it was a dumb move getting a core. Premium  was worth more blah blah blah. Too late to change anything now.

But i'm calling Microsoft today to try and get my system fix. Hope i wont have any problems with the fact it's used and the owner registered it in their name.
