Has anyone seen this movie? I put it on my Netflix, but I'm thinking of just buying it off of Amazon, if it's really as good as the reviews say. I'm almost afraid to watch it, as I'm easily affected, but I'm also drawn to tragic movies for some reason (much to my bf's dismay ha). I'm also not sure which version Netflix has, and I don't want a dubbed version, I want the original Japanese with English subtitles. So if you've seen it, is it a rental or a purchase?

Definitely worth a purchase, but yes it is a very sad and tragic film.

Grave of the Fireflies would be riiight up your alley.  As much of an odd sense of humor as I have, there was nothing in the movie that was even remotely funny.  Very serious, very well done...and very depressing.

IMO, it's in the same boat as Requiem for a Dream.  I respect it, but the only time i'll watch it again is when I need to be reassured that sometimes there are far worse things in life than anything i've seen or experienced.

If you like having tragic movies on standby, it's a definite buy.  I'd encourage you to watch it subtitled as the Japanese voice work is well done and fits the characters naturally.

Watch A Dog of Flanders. Also a tragic story but much better imho. Grave of the Fireflies is also very good but I'm not sure if I felt really sad or really angry while I watched it. Maybe both.

Renaissance 2K:

Which is why I made the joke. Any movie this depressing (no matter how well done) needs to be balanced out with a laugh or two.

this movie was an easy buy for me. It is very sad and tragic yes but it is a movie that deserves to be seen because it shows a perspective from war not shown in most movies. The depressing nature definitely isnt for everyone so if its on your netflix list then maybe you should watch it first before thinking of a purchase.

I got my copy off of this from goozex Yes

Okay I've asked for this for xmas haha.  I know it's a little late to get it for xmas, but I haven't asked for anything yet, so I figured I'd put it out there.  Smile  I know I'll have a love/hate relationship with this movie, but I prefer movies that evoke strong emotional responses.  I could rent it first, but if it's the English dubbed version, it may detract from the movie and I won't like it as much as I could.  I have it in my requests, did disc only for the instant match, and it timed out twice.  Some things I just can't wait for. Let us know what you think of the movie after watching it.  Grave of the Fireflies was a movie that really moved my wife and I... we don't watch it often, but wouldn't dream of getting rid of it.  Obviously some people have different opinions though.

Definite buy! I love this movie and I'm not really a huge anime fan. I watched this with my ex and while she was completely bawling by the end, she too enjoyed it and she was rather difficult to convince that a cartoon film could be extremely emotional.
