mhatter106: batmania15: Google Wave is a self-described "personal communication and collaboration tool" announced by Google at the Google I/O conference on May 27, 2009.[1][2] It is aweb-based service, computing platform, and communications protocol designed to merge e-mail, instant messaging, wikis, and social networking.[3] It has a strongcollaborative and real-time[4] focus supported by extensions that can provide, for example, spelling/grammar checking, automated translation among 40 languages,[2] and numerous other extensions.[4] Initially released only to developers, a "preview release" of Google Wave was extended to 100,000 users in September 2009, each allowed to invite twenty to thirty additional users. On the 29th of November 2009, Google accepted most requests submitted soon after the extended release of the technical preview in September 2009, these users have around 25 invitations to give. Wow..... I still don't know what it is.

Wow..... I still don't know what it is.
What i get from it is it's google's version of a one stop shop of do it all of these type of programs:
merge e-mail, instant messaging, wikis, and social networking.[3]
Pm me your email addy for Lockerz invite have 9 left redemption coming soon
I left the video on in the background and listened to the majority of about an hour of the conference they videotaped, watching here and there. I guess I can kind of see what they are going for....mixing email and instant messaging...although I really don't see a point to it.
Also, if it's a program intended as a social device, isn't it kind of awkward and stupid to release it like this? Wouldn't it be better just as something that you and your friends could go and use if they wanted to? I dunno, I've never been a fan of the "limited release" marketing strategy, because in the end it's a waste of time -- it creates buzz but it doesn't necessarily create interest. GMail only really became popular and widely used when they stopped requiring invites. The same result will probably be found here. I really don't understand this marketing strategy because to the best of my knowledge...it doesn't work...and it's a waste of money and time.
But yeah, even though I watched the video and got a general sense for what it was all about...I still felt bewildered in the end as to why anyone would even want or need to use this? Most of the "features" are just incredibly slight upgrades on things that instant messaging clients already DO. Other "features" are so incredibly pointless that you wonder why anyone not in an office atmosphere would have any need or desire to use them.
I dunno...Wave seems kind of stupid to me....the marketing sucks, the features are barely innovative, I'd never use it...what's the big deal again? Oh, it's all in a browser....well my instant messaging client is all in one program too...just like a browser you generally have to download it to use it, but the nifty thing about my instant messaging client is that they actually have a web based program that allows you to access it via the browser. Can the browser version do everything Wave can? No. Can I access Wave on my instant messaging client? No. Is an instant messaging client really such a draw on system resources that you just had to invent a way to do it all in a browser? I mean there's really almost absolutely no need for this thing....I could go on ranting about it's pointlessness, but I think I've more than made my point here...something Wave has yet to do.

Sorry about the delay, classes took all day today. After playing around with Wave, I'm using these invites to see if some of you can make Wave any more exciting. I mean, it's a novel idea I suppose, But, it's really just slightly speedier e-mail in my opinion. I liked it the first evening I received an invite, but that was honestly about it.
Have any of you found a fun use for it yet?
I've used it for game server trading info with admins and stuff like that. Its great for that. Also is a great workplace tool too if you work in an office for brainstorming and other processes that require people. And the reason it was released like this is so people can test it and give input on it. Its a closed beta that you invite your friends to, same with gmail back long ago. That way you have more of a focused group instead of a scattered out mess.
I've got 6 invites left so if you need one, PM me your email address you want me to send the invite too.

That definitely makes sense. I finally received my invite to the Google Voice closed beta, and I gotta say, it's amazing. I can't wait for them to actually roll that service out.
I bet this Wave thing turns out to be a hit.
Google generally is on the ball when it comes to developing stuff. Stuff we don't know we need, but then realize we do.

Any chance somebody can send an invite to keithlklaus@gmail.com ?
I had an invite about six weeks ago, but gave it to my brother because I really, really don't get it. I've watched the videos and have been following it since it was announced. Do we need email and instant messaging to be reinvented? I feel like those are two things that are working pretty well for us right now... maybe I'll actually sign up this time and find out I'm wrong.
Got you covered. Sent

It's really used for collaboration rather than IM and email and all. For companies, it's a useful tool when you have a few people working on a project that are not in the same location.
It's nothing new - there are similar tools like Microsoft Groove. The interest in Wave is that it's platform independent (it's browser based). However, right now it's so buggy that it's really only useful for testing purposes (it's a pre-beta invitation after all).
*edit* I also have invites, PM me for one.

There seems to be so many people trying to give out invites, whats the incentive to give your invite out, just wondering

I'm not seeing one personally. It's hardly a difficult thing to get into.
And no, I don't want an invite.
There's no incentive to give out invites. I just have some available, and if it makes someone happy to get to test Wave, it's better than having the invite rot in my inbox :)
