So I had bit of a router issue today.  I came home from work saw the router light was RED and my modem's "link" light was not lit.  First thing I did was reset the modem, thinking if the link light isn't lit it's a modem problem.  That didn't work so I unplugged the router and plugged it back in and everything was golden.  Turns out for some reason ALL the router settings got reset to default, which has never happened in the 9 years I've had the router but hey whatever, so I had to go in and change some things (UPnP, port forwarding for PNP connections, etc. etc.).

I turn on my PS3 and it's having trouble finding the DNS server.  I'm like wha?  I spent about 45 minutes manually configuring and changing IP addresses and DNS servers and all this other nonsense before I remembered that I had it hooked into a Hub with my 360 and Wii and the Hub was hooked into the router.  So I unplugged the Hub and plugged it back in and everything is golden again with the game systems.

With all the computer knowledge and techniques and settings and configurations and EVERYTHING else, what hell is it about "unplug it and plug it back in" that seems to solve EVERYTHING.  I mean all this "sophisticated" technology at our finger tips and something as rudimentary as "unplug it and plug it back in" is still the the thing that seems fix all the problems.

What really ticks me off is that it's also like the last thing I try sometimes.  You'd think after all these years it would be the first thing I try but it's not.  Guess I'm just so used to computer things being complicated that I forget that sometimes the simplest answer is the correct one.

Sorry bout the wall 'o text but this is second time in two weeks I've spent WAY too much time messing with routers just to have "unplug it and plug it back in" be the thing that fixes them.  Ok.....NOW I'm gonna go play some games Stick out tongue

It kind of takes the fun out of fixing things.  Back in the day, you couldn't fix a tube tv by unplugging it and plugging it back in.  You got to kick it!  That would usually fix it.

Now it's just no matter what the lcd is doing wrong, unplug it, wait for the light to go off, and plug it back in, and it's fixed.

Rule of thumb when dealing with electronics is, if it's messing up, restart it.

Agreed wholeheartedly with the OP.  It often makes me appear to be a tech god here at work...lol.

What I hate though is when it doesnt work until the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th time...getting that feeling of 'I did the EXACT SAME THING 3 hrs ago and it didn't work!'

I actually suspect I may be having router problems myself, but they only surfaced when I moved to Win7, so I'm not exactly sure how to proceed.

I don't know how many times I have to tell this to family members asking for help.  Restart it and check all connections.

It's easily my #1 line here at the corporate help desk.  It's unfortunate that I have to continually tell the same people over and over.

I remember an old Mac I had.  It was a G3 I Believe.  Huge blue monitor.  There was a line a bout a 1/4 of the way down the screen that just appeared one day.  I researched it on apple support and I kid you not, thier official answer was open hand and with palm side facing the monitor, gently hit the side.....  It worked.....Yes

Yeah, that happened yesterday too with the Router.  It took two tries, after the first one I was stumped like "huh...unplugging and plugging back in didn't work"  that's when I called my ISP thinking it was something on their end and he had me unplug it and plug it back in and THAT time it worked.  Sometimes I think they're doing things on their end WHILE you're unplugging it just so you feel stupid when it does again.

At least that's what I would do to mess with people Devil

One of my favorite South Park episodes ever... OH NO, THE INTERNET DRIED UP!

But yea, I use this on my router and TV with fair regularity... in fact, if I haven't had to restart my router in a while, somtimes I just turn it off and leave it for a bit and then turn it back on... I'm not sure why the unplug/replug is so successful, but i have a feeling it has to do with electronics getting more complicated... I'm sure we all know/work with someone who never shuts off their PC and just has it on for 6 months straight, and gets crappy performance eventually from all the little processes and whatnot that haven't shut down in the background...

I've done that!

But I've never had to restart my router, except to fix an issue caused by my ISP.
