I got my first jury summons last month and basically had the same thing happen, but on a larger scale.  I would guess there were 300-400 people there, and about 50 of us had our names randomly chosen and we were told our duty was fulfilled and all that.  I would like to do it sometime as well, but was kind of glad I didn't get picked becuase it was a kind of rough week at work.

The main annoyance I had was that they give you a $10 stipend, but parking was $16.

$10? They gave us $6.  Parkign was $5.50 but the jury summons also serves as a free metro rail pass for the day, so I just took that instead.  The trial I was up for would have been a 2 day trial; it owuld have been nice to have a 2 day break from work.  Instead I got a 1 day break. I'll take it.

I think all of Washington state pays $10, so maybe $10 covers more outside of Seattle, but in Seattle the $10 isn't going to do too much.  They also included a free bus pass, but our bus system is terrible and I think I would have had to get on a bus by like 6:15 AM in order to get to the courthouse by 8 AM.

I think you've got to be nuts about the bus system.  Seattle's got one of the best public transit systems in the nation.  I'm really missing it now that I'm in Spokane.  When I lived in Seattle I'd commute on the bus every night and morning, to work and back.  Drive to the ferry terminal, ride the ferry across the sound, walk to the bus tunnel, and ride the bus down to sea tac.  Bus was nearly always on time, and even during 'night owl' service times when I'd normally be going to work (anytime from 11pm to 3 am) it consistantly runs every half hour.

I'm pretty sure you're dead on in regards to Washington state's jury pay, though.  I don't know first hand, however, as I've been registered to vote since my 18th birthday, for 13 years, and never once received a summons.

I was actually just joking with a coworker today about how to weasel your way out, but in regards to the draft.

Recruiter: "Well, son. Let's see. Your physical checks out. Mentally you're fine. Now if you could just answer this list of questions."

Recruit: "Sure. Let's see... Yes. No. No. Yes. As far as question #5, I think the United States was wrong and should never have started that war in the first place."

Recruiter: "Son, question #5 is please explain how America was the War of Independence.... you must be thinking of question 6, regarding the war in Iraq."

Recruit: "I know, sir. Now, about question 6. I'd hardly call us terrorizing the population of another country a real war."

That should get you out of anything. Smile

The DMV must provide the list because I too wasn't registered to vote the first time I got called.  I was in college still but was anxious to be a part of the jury.  However, it would have landed on finals week so I used it as an excuse to get deferred, noting that I really did want to take part.

Sure enough, 6 months later, in the middle of summer, I was summoned again, but the whole thing got settled out of court so again I woke up unnecessarily early for nothing.  I was told that just by 'being available' I was good for the next 4 years.  Crap.

Then I moved from NY to CT and actually registered to vote but haven't heard anything since in the year I've been here.

You guys talking about $10 bucks for showing up is nice.  Not only did I not get anything, but I still had to pay parking!

There must be other means too for finding people for jury duty.  The last time I got called I was in college in Massachusetts, for Massachusetts jury duty.  But my driver's license and voter registration were still both New York at the time.

Here in TX, you can claim exemption if you are a full time student though.

Most of it is probably ignorance on my part, I admit... I just know that the bus I take to work sometimes takes roughly an hour, while if I drive its about 20 minutes... I've looking into taking the bus to Safeco, but it didn't seem like it would have been very efficient...  getting from the Eastside to Seattle doesn't seem that easy from what I've seen, but again, i could very well be wrong...

It was because you where in college, Massachusetts obtains lists from the college's as one of their sources.

I don't have to worry about jury duty. One more perk to being a law enforcement officer. Big Smile

My wife had never got picked until about 1 year ago and so far she has been picked 3 times in the last year.

Twice she was dismissed the night before because the defendant plead out.  The other time, she had to go but was released by the defendant's attorney because of the "prejudices" that she had towards alleged criminals (since she is married to one of those dirty pigs and all.)

If the US ever implements the draft again....and I don't see it happening short of a Chinese invasion...FedGov will be so desperate for bodies nothing you could say or do would get you out of it....just get you "volunteered" to be expended as cannon fodder with a mob of fellow malcontents to divert the enemy's attention from troops they actually care about.

The draft cannot be used in case of invasion because marshal law would kick in far before the 6-month time period that Federal law gives for Selective Service to provide its draftees to the armed forces. It is purely designed for foreign wars.

All that can be changed with a simple Act of Congress.......my point is the Draft is so politically unpopular that it would only be implemented again in extreme circumstances, and under those extreme circumstances, the price for defying the Feds would also be extreme. Interestingly enough, the only people who talk about re-instating the draft are the Democrats...and thier stated logic is that a draft would make the military less able to fight abroad.

Naturally. I agree it's unpopular. I was more referring to the fact that any invasion would wipe out Washington's infrastructure and thus knock out the Selective Service mailing center. :)

The invaders probably would not wipe out Washington as the country would operate more efficiently without it. :)
