So I was thinking today about the trophy system on the PS3. I really enjoy it overall, and like how it might make me do things in a game I might ordinarily not do in order for that sense of completion. Basically, I liken it to collecting baseball cards (my first real vice I think) and how exciting it was to complete a set and things like that. Anyways, I was wondering wny Sony doesn't do anything more with them after you earn them.
Simple stuff I was thinking would be along the lines of :
After you earn a trophy, that trophy's icon can be used as an avatar. Or, maybe each game has 4 avatars you can unlock at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% completion. Something along those lines.
At specified "levels" you get access to a free theme or something on the PSN. Maybe every 5 levels you unlock a new dynamic theme?
Trophies could be "placed" in your apartment in Playstation@Home.
Mainly I was just thinking of reasonable (from a gamer perspective, and from Sony's perspective) rewards that could be offered and would maybe drive some gaming habits.
Also, I haven't played the 360 too much, so I am not really familiar with the Achievement system. Is there anything like the above done on the 360?
Yes they started a new thing with in game achievements on the 360. Now with newer games you will unlock certain avatar items when you gain achievements

I thought the 'Trophy Room' was a work in progress for Home. However, I may have just been reading another wishlist. I'd love to see that added, though I seldom use Home.
Some sort of incentive would be nice, even just increased ways to show them off, but I'm pretty pleased with the system. I was actually hoping STEAMS achievements would get a show-off improvement lately, maybe some sort of leveling progress like the two consoles have.

The Facebook update in 3.1 will probably do a good job of increasing your showoff power.
One thing I really like about Steam achievements is seeing the % of players who have earned each achievement.

Indeed. Though I don't have any RL friends that have PS3s yet, nor do I spend much time on Facebook.
I too enjoy that % feature. A shame that some games (TF2 for example) have inflated achievement results due to achievement servers.

They've been talking about that trophy room since well before the home open Beta launch, I think even in the Home trailer that came out over a year before the launch. Still though, who would see it? Maybe I'm the exception, but I don't use my Home personal space for anything, so I don't end up inviting anyone there.

I don't even bother with home I would rather spend my ps3 time playing actual video games in which I bought the system for.

That's pretty much my mindset too, though I would enjoy having a reason to sign on to mingle with others, if I were part of a clan or group or something. If the Goozex Club were more lively.
However, without any ability to launch most titles from within Home, there's not much reason to gather beforehand...disappointing to say the least.
I agree that Home is pretty pointless, at least so far. I sign on once in a while, just to screw around mainly, or if there is something free during a certain period (like the Infamous clothes).
My preference would be for avatars / wallpapers / themes. Avatars that were unlocked for game-specific trophy completion, and wallpapers / themes for your overall PSN level.
Most of my friends list on the PS3 is RL friends, but neither myself or my friends really use Facebook much. I mainly use it as a means to email people when I dont have their actual email address or phone number. And I have spouts of addiction to Mafia Wars.

Exactly. There's literally no reason to go on Home because there's no attractive functionality to it. It's just a graphical chat room. Which is too bad because the goozex clubhouse is pretty nicely decorated. It'd be cool if you coudl have your avatar in home (or in the clubhouse) while you were playing a game, and press the PS button to tab in and out.

Xbox does it right in the way you can compare achievements with friends for all games really easily. This is somthing Sony should really look into emulating.

My bad, thats what I get for not keeping up to date on the updates. When was that introduced or has it always been there and I just sucked at navigating my PS3?

Yeah, it's been there ever since trophies were introduced which i think was last fall. Underneath ur friend's player card there are the 4 icons: messages, create message, compare trophies, and delete friend.

I think I used that before. Does it just compare how many achievements you have but not game by game? Can you look at a friends achievements and see that for the one game he has this achievement but you dont have it yet? I never felt comfortable while navigating my PS3 menus so I might have missed it.
