Man, when companies have pissing contests they really do. Today MS is doing a firmware update for the XB360 with facebook integration. Well so is Sony for the PS3. I didn't think this update would come out until a couple weeks since we only started hearing about it less than a week ago.
Anyways, after the last firmware fiasco, I would wait perhaps until early next week until installing it (that's what I'm doing anyways - I didn't even install that last firmware update)

Sony still doesn't get it. Tired of these crappy FW updates. Give me cross game invites, party system, chat system (non-text)... How hard is it to focus on the actually stuff important to gaming. Just like on the 360, I don't give a damn about Facebook on my console.......... What happened to trying to improve gaming and not just trying to make everything a more social networking experience. -_-
Wow, I too am surprised. I generally check gaming news regularly M-F, but hadn't seen anything regarding 3.10 until yesterday myself, and those were just speculative stories. I don't see the incentive to rush it, though I'm sure it has something to do with the Facebook nonsense.
I too avoided the 3.01 firmware. Just like PC BIOS upgrades, I'm not going to do a risky update just for kicks.

Forgot that I too wanted to ask that. I'll also skip it if it's not needed. Facebook annoys the hell out of me enough on my PC...I don't need it on my PS3 too.
I hear you. I treat that update that same as HOME (which is obviously a flop as Sony is changing the HOME vocation)....pointless. Yet, if you want to go online, you need to download it......sigh.

I often forget that this is even a problem. Only PS3 I've ever owned is the 80GB and even without the full BC chip I have never had a problem playing PS2 games.

i have an OG 60gb BC ps3, and I too forgot this was even an issue...Now off to play ZOE2!
That's what I use as well. Most work fine, though unfortunately this model will not play the Ratchet & Clank or Jak and Dexter series. They don't run at full speed, and the sluggishness is too much to bear. SONY just told me "we're always improving the BC quality", which didn't exactly help me then, or now.
Hoping for a collection disc for those two series, in a similar vein as GoW.
I think that when Sony starts selling PS2 games on the PSN network, then it might happen. Until then, my first generation PS2 is still running. Just received Motorstorm: Arctic Edge...lots of fun although easy up to now!
It must be a regional thing, I seem to already have the latest firmware available, and can't update anymore.
I figure this one will be like the rest, you have to update to play online, so the best thing is to do it now, not while someone is waiting on me!
