Facebook coming next PS3 Firmware Update

Hi everyone, here’s an early peek at PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.10). The latest update incorporates Facebook into the PS3 experience. By linking your PlayStation Network account to your Facebook account, you will have the option for the PS3 to automatically update your Facebook News Feed with Trophy and PlayStation Store activity. This update also enables developers to set specific criteria in their titles to publish additional game information to your News Feed. You can then check out your updates, and those of your friends, on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media favorites through the PS3’s built-in web browser.

This is just the beginning of our integration with Facebook and we are looking forward to adding new features enhancing the experience in future updates.

And I'm pretty sure it's still free.

The most useful part of the update (for me at least) is being able to change the background color of your player ID card.

It's not cross game chat or PS2 BC magically being added, but i'll take it.

Yeah I saw that video.  I dotn really use Facebook, but its nice they added that functionality.   I agree that the most useful part for me will be the color changing of your player ID card.  Was really hopping x-game chat would be in this next one.

I watched the preview video of the firware update and the starnge thing is that in order for your trophy status to get reflected on your Facebook page, it will require a trophy sync with the servers, which is manual.  So in making this update, they remained completely aware that trophy sync is sitll not yet automatic, but they still left it that way.

Meh. Not cross-game chat, not netflix on the system, not online compatable with 360s (I can dream, right?) So, I'm not really interested.

I'm assuming it's just to be easier (and cheaper) on the server load for trophies.  There are times now that it takes 10+ seconds to sync manually (or gives you an error) when the server is bogged down.  I can only imagine the connection problems if they tried to have it auto-sync in it's current configuration.

Maybe some day  they'll add better servers and start auto-syncing in the background with a future FW - but if what they're doing now helps the service to stay cost-free, i'm perfectly fine with a ~10 second manual sync.

However....if we don't get cross-game chat in 2010, there will be blood.

I thought we were supposed to get it before the end of October.

Speaking of "cross game chat" I was thinking of trying this out: I don't have a headset yet for my 360 but I wanted to try GOW2 coop online with my friend.  I think we might just start a ps3 voice chat and play GOW2 at the same time.  Kind of a cross platform chat. heh

Call me cynical, but I believe very little of what Sony says and promises...same goes for MS.

Cross-game chat may be tricky to accomplish since PSN wasn't originally developed with the feature in mind, plus MS has a patent on how they integrated the service on XBL.  I'm sure it will happen eventually in some form (Skype perhaps?)...and it will have some issues to work out once it hits.

A little sloppy, but it  works.  I've used Roger Wilco and Teamspeak on my PC to work around lack of chat on PS3.

Mostly pointless features added in this version at least for me.  Would love to see support for a lossless audio format besides wav.

I read somewhere that one of the devs at Naughty Dog had a plog post that mentioned cross game chat or some such to be coming in 3.10, but then the post was quickly deleted.  I wonder what that's about.

Probably because it was a plog post.
