According to this article, we have casual gamers to thank for that. Of course, I've been saying all along that the casual draw of the Wii crowd would have an adverse effect on the industry.

Now maybe publishers will spend less time cranking out craptastic, less-than-mediocre Wii games and devote their resources to making games I actually care about.

Hey, a guy can dream.

I love this line "October sales indicate that casual gamers are largely at fault for the continued decline in industry sales."

Of course it is the casual gamers fault that there is a decline in sales, it couldnt be the developers fault.

didn't read the article but i can tell you MW2's sales aren't factored in that percentage

Pizza guys are getting worse and worse looking. I guess all the good ones went into porn.

Thats because MW2 was not released in october.

How much was MW2 a factor in October sales?

Sometime in October in the mind of a gamer:

"Hey I have $120 set aside for games for next couple of months.  I will definitely get MW2 and maybe L4D 2 or Dragon's Age....guess I ain't buying today..."

I'm not convinced casual gamers affect game sales to a large degree.  Playing casual games and 4+ hour games are two completely different things under the ubiquitous "video game" umbrella.  The demographics alone for the two are completely different.  Just saying...

It's funny that the article noted the rhythm based games as taking the biggest hit. You would think it would make sense that people wouldn't want to drop $100+ for another set of plastic instruments that will probably collect dust, all the while only slightly improving gameplay on the actual game.

I would tend to agree with you, but I'm not sure publishers would. Look at all the casual crap that was churned out last year. Thanks to all the non-gamers buying Wiis, publishers had dollar signs in their eyes as they calculated how much profit could be made by selling under-produced games to non-gamers. And then they lament the fact that all those non-gamers went back to whatever it was they were doing before they bought their Wii, taking the easy profits with them.

Well, at least now they're blaming casual gamers instead of people buying used games Confused

My favorite quote:

"We believe it will take the introduction of some new style of gameplay or peripheral before we see a resurgence in the casual and non-traditional markets..."

So the problem is that casual gamers don't want to buy the same reheated crap again?  They are looking for something either new or improved over what's already out there??

I'm shocked by that analysis.

well I cant say Im surprised by rhythm game taking a hit in sales especially since I keep seeing the adds for the new band hero game w/Taylor Swift. Every time I think about rocking out to my guitar the first thing that comes to my mind are the awesome mindbending Taylor Swift guitar solos that accompany all of her tracks. Afterwards I bet I'll work up a huge sweat on my Jackson 5 drum solo
TITO ROCKS!!!!! Does Tito even play drums - who the hell cares? . If they keep putting out crap that isnt worth buying then they cant expect people to go into the store and buy it especially at full price which is usually too high anyways.

(sarcasm on)

OF COURSE it's the gamers (hardcore & casual) fault...in no way is it the craptastic releasegamesbeforetheyareready, or the letsputanotherrhythmbasedgame Publishers fault, OH NO!!

(sarcasm off)

I've been a gamer for some time now, and I've had to watch publishers jump of the gaming genre bandwagon (no pun intended) many a time. Then when the market is so flooded with these genre of games that nobody is buying them anymore, IT'S the gamers fault for the lack of sales? Gee go figure. Angry

I'm personally glad that rhythm games are taking a hit.  I ran out and bought that new Band Hero game with Taylor Swift, only to find she WASN'T in the box.  My short entry into the rhythm genre was ended when I returned the defective merchandise. I won't stand for false advertising.
