I find Burton's Batman with Michael Keaton much better. Jack Nicholson is a better Joker and Keaton's a much cooler Batman.

Blasphemy. While the original holds a special place in my heart, and I did enjoy Keaton as Bruce Wayne, I still don't think it holds a candle to the current franchise.

And The Dark Knight may not be the end-all, be-all of action movies, but I have to give credit where credit is due and say that Ledger's performance was one of the best I've ever seen and deserving of every accolade it received (his performance, not necessarily the film as a whole).

Yeah, The Dark Knight is really overrated and while I expect to get flamed from saying this, Heath Ledger's death definitely had something to do with the popularity. Though he is the best part of the movie.

Burton's Batman is better, but I while I think Nicholson is great as the joker, he could never top Ledger. Bale and Keaton are both good, but I never liked either of their Batmans.

On a slightly unrelated note (#9 in IMDBs top 250? laughable), I just re-watched The Dark Knight with a more critical eye and where I used to be a fanboy of the movie, I am now on the fence. It is not a well made film, however fun it may be. I hope this ends up being one of the movies so that I can give my reasons why.

I'd be interested in hearing.  I really liked the movie the first time I saw it, some time ago (not in theaters).  Now I own it on BRD through Goozex, but haven't actually watched it again.  I wonder if I too will be more critical of it, but I remember just enjoying it.

The only way this will happen is if the requirement for the week is "movies you've seen 10 times or more"  which seems somewhat antithetical to the OP's  plans.  I think "well-made"  can have a couple meanings, i think I know what you mean, like in a film school kind of way you can't analyze it shot for shot and admire the artistry of the diector, but  I think it is well crafted, like something more utilitarian than artistic.  It will probably move down the list as the years go by.  I would like to have a discussion about the 3rd installment.  I think I have the perfect Joker replacement- igorponweed! - no actually Charlie Hunnam currently on Sons of Anarchy, also Cold Mtn, Green Street Hooligans) he looks enough like Heath Ledger, but he would have a much darker edge.  WHo do you think should play Catwoman? I think that has to be the next villain, Penguin and Mr Freeze are a little too cartoony, but maybe Nolan could pull off a reality based Mr Freeze.  I can't think of any great Catwoman candidates, ecfept maybe Summer Glau.

Well agreedagreed, I'm not going to say a movie has to be artsy in a film school way to be well-made.

While Ledger is great  The Dark Knight was just so sloppy. Some parts were fantastic (great opening sequence, creating a stark, surprising contrast within the first seconds).

Bad editing (in some parts): prime example is when Joker throws whatsherface out of the window and Batman jumps out to save her. The fall is badly done. It has 12 or so shots, when it really should only have 6 - this makes the scene disjointed and less powerful.
From scanners: "I feel the momentum of the sequence is broken by the cutaways to close-ups of Rachel/Batman and the two mysterious shots of the cab driver upon whose vehicle they are destined to land. There's no payoff to the driver's cameo, so why include him. Also, the shot of the actual impact is too close to the same angle of the falling shot before it. Unfurled Batwings partially disguise the cut between them, but (to me) the effect was like following somebody plummeting from the sky, only to film their landing by shooting them jumping off a curb. An overhead angle ("Vertigo"), a below-the body angle ("The Tenant"), a toward-the-street angle ("Infernal Affairs") -- any of these would have been more effective, in my opinion."
Video of how it should have been cut. Just watch it, and think about which version is more effective. Then, apply this to much of the last 1/2 of the movie.

Terrible narrative logic: School bus getaway scene. Simply the way this shot is set up is poorly done. This one shot I'm talking about probably cost about $50,000 to shoot, so you would think that they would have done it right.

Bad visual storytelling: Nolan (director) says his favorite film maker is Hitchcock. It makes you then wonder why he seems to not have a good handle of his visuals. Some images are striking, but they're disconnected and don't combine to create a cohesive whole. Nolan uses a lot of dialogue  as exposition to explain what's going on, whereas Hitchcock could remove all the dialogue from his films and you could still know what is going on (go ahead, try it). Some might ask why this is bad - and I would say that if you're just going to tell a story through dialogue, make it a book - movies are visual.

The first time I saw the movie, I was really excited and had fun but had a weird taste in my mouth. The things above are the main reasons why. And yes, the movie is still really fun and cool, but it shouldn't be listed among "best movies ever."

Guy that chose this week's movie:
Here's an obsure title for ya, hope you all have a VHS or Betamax. Drumroll, please! Ratatatatatatatatatatata!! The Dark Knight! If it doesn't work, I'll think of something else.

Woah for a second I thought igorponweed said we were talking about Surf II this week! I must have misread what he said!

You can watch the entire movie here:

Surf II

It's in 10 clips of about 10 minutes each.

This isn't going to work very well if we start just talking about whatever movies we feel like talking about. If you want to talk about a particular movie, then hope that the person before you gives you a requirement that lets you pick it when it's your turn to do so.

No need for attitude and sarcasm.
I believe I said that I hope TDK was the movie for one of the weeks, and I kept my ideas to myself - but it sparked interest and people like Kenny asked my opinion. Since there wasn't a movie for week 0 and discussion doesn't begin until the end of the first week, what's the harm?

Also, editing of quotes in any shape or form is not allowed. A mod should be editing your post (or I suppose you can do it yourself).

Well then the sarcasm was obviously not directed at you.

I didn't edit anyone's quote. I created a quote for my own uses.

I didn't say that it was - I said it was unnecessary, just as your attitude continues to be.
You also didn't address my point - that as there is no 0 week movie so there is no harm in talking about something else until everyone is done watching Surf II.

There is to be no editing or "creating" of quotes. Consider this your friendly mod warning.

talking about whatever movies we feel like talking about.

1. conversations are going to be organic, we may end up talking about a bunch of movies suggested by the convo.

2.  I mentioned the only good thing I could think of about the only clip I had available at the time, no one said anything.  It would help if the chooser selects something obscure or hard to get that they provide a readily available source in a link or a reliable location at least.

3.  basically if your movie is discussion worthy, it will be discussed, you can't force people to be interested in crap, sorry. Zip it!  choosing a deliberately bad movie is an interesting idea, but that wasn't the category this time.  I've watched Plan 9 from outer space once upon a time for that reason.  I didn't enjoy it much, but at least I could discuss it, I suppose.

4. discussion can include saying you think it's stupid, which I do, Surf 2 doesn't really warrant dissection.  ymmv, i'm not telling anyone to shut up or anything, all opinions are welcome, positive or negative.
