man i hate talking to isp providers

Well, I have Earthlink cable and I did a speed test to see how fast my connection was.  At the time it was like

1.5 mbps download speed.  I call up Comcast as we pay our earthlink through them.  I ask what speed I am paying for as 1.5mbps for $45 a month seems like crap to me..... they say I am paying for 1mbps but they can move to the comcastic cable speed of 6mbps for the same price!!!!!!  I decline and decide to ask the wife about it first so that I can sleep in my own bed tonight . 

I get home and decide to test my connection again.  The first time was a little over 7 mbps??? It then averaged  the following:

This is on my laptop over the wireless.  It is a bit different from the 1.5 mbps I was getting before.

I find a number foe Earthink and I think talked to someone in a different country.  It took 3 minutes just to find my account with the person.  My phone number didn't work, my email address didnt work.. nothing.  FINALLY she finds it.  She says Iam should get betweem 2 mbps to 6mbps.  She was then unhelpful in trying to figure out why last week I was at 1.5 mbps and today after calling comcast and having them look, I am now getting over 6mbps.

They both suck, but man that Earthlink lady was clueless.

My favorite question from her in trying to verify my account was "What is your fathers middle name."  My responce is "my father doesn't have a middle name..."

They use tricky language to fool you into think you're getting more than you are.

You never "pay for 5 Mbps." What you're paying for is "up to" 5 Mbps.

Checking your speed during different times of the day can yield different results. If your local area is crowded with a bunch of people all on the same service, it can slow you down. Also, your ISP might throttle your speed during specific times of the day. Usually during peak hours.

I hate talking to internet service provider providers too.

So, according to earthlink, I should get between 2mbps and 6 mbps..

so that was unexpected....

nice upload speed.  I just wish I could get an answer as to what range I am paying for... You must pay a pretty penny for yours.  Impressive.

I pay about  $70-75 a month for my HD digital cable, and internet.  It's on a 6 month promotion, but every time it's about to expire I just call up and tell them I'm switching to Direct TV, and they re-up it.

I am going to call at lunch tomorrow.  I tend to get someone who I can understand when I call early in the day.  My conversation was worse than I am even letting on.  She had to talk to her resouce manager twice.  By that I think she meant put him on hold for a few minutes for no reason.

Your "local" ISP is probably almost a monopoly and is likely owned by a larger, much wider reaching, corporation. The current internet infrastructure is a complete sham. Too bad it's so addicting...

I'm capped at about 10 Mbps down and 1.5 Mbps up.

I seem to have slowed down. I'm at 5MBits/s subscription, but they used to give me up to 20.
