Schaumburg - my next-door neighbor is Motorola.  I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not.

Catastrophic:

Hopefully I'm not joining in on this thread after some time tomorrow. Tuesday night, my TV crapped out on me. I went to turn it on and it made some buzzing noise while attempting to come on, but it doesn't. It gets sound but no picture. We bought it from Best Buy with a 3 year warranty sometime last year. I called them Wednesday morning and after they had me unplug it for two minutes and plug it back in (to "recharge the cell") the lady told me I was "in luck" that they could schedule me for an appointment on Friday. I don't feel too lucky about waiting 2 days, but ok.

Anywho, they're sending out someone to come look at the tv at my house, which leads me to believe they think its a wiring issue or something petty, unless the guy plans to dissasemble the TV and repair it at my house (I don't know, I've never needed a TV repaired before) and if its something else then what? They haul it away and I wait longer? I'm not some old guy  who doesn't know how to use an HDTV, I'm quite aware of when it's working properly and when something's wrong. So i'm already on edge over the situation.

There is often delays for at home TV service up to a month. If they have to take away the TV, some plans will give you a loaner TV if the TV being worked on is larger than 37"

it's actually cheaper and faster to send someone to your house to repair it

It's still under the warranty so it won't cost us anything. That's why we have to put up with this garbage.

and to TaintedZodiac, its funny, since the sound works and not the picture I put it on the music channels and listen to that while i'm cleaning, so yeah, for now that's what I got!

I went with the cheap Westinghouse at the time, becuase it was the biggest 1080p I could afford

I hope you have better luck than I did. Westinghouse is the brand of TV I had problems with. Two different models. I doubt I'll ever buy another Westinghouse TV.

It's actually my second one too.  My first LCD was a 32" Westinghouse off of Newegg that actually worked quite well for the 18 months I had it, then I sold it to fund the 47".  The 47" was fine for almost two years as well, and just recently started having problems.  But, now that I have a real job and whatnot, I will probably spring for something higher quality for the next TV.

Back onto the main topic, I think the main gripe boils down to : on average, Best Buy provides poor customer service, and has uninformed commision based employees in a situation where you could be spending $100s or $1000s of dollars.  I was a bank teller for a while in college, and the sales aspect made me feel like a greasy used car salesman, but there were other tellers who clearly had no issues with it and were happy leave out details, or pretend they knew answers in order to sell a product and get themselves more money.  I don't see Best Buy as much different really, at least from my experience.

And devyanks90, you sound like one of the few knowledgable Best Buy folks that seem to be sprinkled throughout each store.  Thanks for the info, and keep up the good work.  Or be lazy and just go each week to earn your paycheck, thats the American way.

Thanks. Truthfully, my epically long post was made only because I was bored and stuck in my college's student center with nothing to do in the middle of a rainstorm dumping 14.2 inches down here. I went seasonal because of school and I haven't worked since late August. i'm working at Best Buy because they were the first people to offer me a job (Got interviewed by Toys 'R Us and a local grocery store but nothing came of those) My goal is to not have people complain about me so I don't have to deal with the people above me.

A grocery store probably isn't going to be any better.  I worked in one for almost two years as a checker and it wasn't that awesome.  The only decent part was the fact that it was union so I got a good raise every 600 hours without any sort of review.  Went from $8 to $9.70 to $11.30 in the time I was there, and since it was part time I was pretty stoked for that.  But the job made me more of a republican becuase of the stupid way people treat all the public food assistance programs.  Nothing like watching some chubby trashy lady with four kids spend $200 in food stamps on beef jerky, hot pockets, pizza rolls, and chips.  Plus being screamed at becuase someones 35 cents off Depends coupon expired in 1998 was always great.

yeah, the grocery store was like... oh ,you do after school activities, we aren't going to give you hours then, so if you want to reconsider the school stuff give us a call.

It is a well-known fact that people with after-school activities ALWAYS put the milk on top of the eggs when bagging at a grocery store.

Best Buy likes to put things on sale that they have a very limited supply of. Its there own "legal" bait and switch policy.

THIS IS SO TRUE! THEY DO IT ALL THE TIME.  once i went to get just one game that was in their ad for "clearace" I got there 20 minutes after it opened.  I work until they open in the morning.  Lo and behold they are sold out.  I asked the clerk and he informed me that they only had 3 copies when the ad started to run.  Got my raincheck and I did get a call and email.  a month and a half later when they got them in.  I was able to talk to the same clerk who told me that it was unusual for a raincheck to be honored because when they put the games on "clearace" they dont get shipped anymore.  I asked where the copy i asked for came from and he said "One of they guys who works here decided he didn't want to buy the game after all and put it back on the shelf"  BUNCH OF SAVAGES LIVE IN THIS TOWN I SWEAR!

The average Best Buy employee seems pretty ill-informed.  When I bought GH : World Tour band kit bundle there, I sprung for the extra $25 "protection plan" or whatever it was, becuase the salesman assured me that if anything broke, I could bring it in and exchnage it, as well as "trade up" if new peripherals came out.  Well, I brought the band kit home, the guitar didn't work so I brought it back the next day and exchanged it.  A few months later the drums stopped working so I brought them in to exchange as well.  At that point they claimed the protection plan only covered the first incidence of a problem, and additional malfunctions were not covered.  I eventually got my drums replaced after an hour of talking to various managers and whatnot, but it was a pretty BS situation and soured me more to buying games from there.  A few months later, I found goozex :)

Regarding their protection plans, I have one on my TV and have had to have it repaired twice (I went with the cheap Westinghouse at the time, becuase it was the biggest 1080p I could afford).  Does anyone know if there is a limit to the number of times they will repair something before replacing it?

3 times

Unfortunately, I've been calling corporate, and getting sent to a 'Reward Zone Specialist'.  I wouldn't bother going in store for my issue, as even if the people in my store were knowledgeable about the subject in the least, it's been made painfully obvious they have zero ability to resolve the issue.

One of the managers at my Best Buy is awesome.  The one who made the employee give me my Dragon Age CE which he had put on hold for himself.  The other one, I only ever see two managers at my store, won't even talk to me anymore.  When they need help and call the manager, as I always seem to get 'the new girl training on the register' who doesn't know how to price match or input coupons not in the system, if she's there, she starts to come over, sees me, and calls a senior CSR to go assist me.  I had an issue with her a couple months back where she refused to do a price match for Batman.  I ended up getting that one at one of the other Best Buys in town, then a week later when we bought my wife a laptop, and a couple other decent sized purchases, I went in, asked for the general manager, showed him my receipt for the Batman game from a different Best Buy because his was unwilling to please a customer, and then the $600+ in receipts from Staples, Walmart, and Target, that could have been Best Buy receipts had his manager took any care to customer service.

I don't know if she avoids me because she's pissed at me, or because I told the GM that I'd walk out before doing business with her again, but either way, the other manager has been especially cool since then, and they've gotten about $1500 of my money since that time, between my laptop and other school supplies, ps3, and games.

If it weren't for that one issue with them telling me I'd earn $25 in certificates for the PS3 slim, and then my not getting them, I'd only have a problem with one Best Buy manager, not the company or employees at all.

The bit about "At that point they claimed the protection plan only covered the first incidence of a problem, and additional malfunctions were not covered." is actually the policy of the plan that you can see in the terms and conditions. If you cash in on your protection plan, you get what you paid for, but then you need to buy another plan on the new product. It's not really their fault, because you technically got what you wanted out of the plan; a fixed guitar. After that, the plan had been fulfilled.

"Does anyone know if there is a limit to the number of times they will repair something before replacing it?" The answer to this question is 2 times if it's resonable for them to repair it for you (as opposed to replacing it). After that, they will claim it's a Lemon and will give you a new one.

And yes, I work at Best Buy.

Thats what i ment by the 3 times comment above, third time a charm is the way they discribe it.
