WHAT. This game is one of the best JRPG titles on the PlayStation.
I've never played it, but it seems to have been really well received.

It was alright. The graphics and music are amazing, not just technically but stylistically as well. The combat kind of sucks because they tried to innovate too hard, but they did some really progressive things (you can run from any battle, and grinding has been completely eliminated). The story was alright but too melodramatic and a lot of the plot foundation is quite fundamentally stupid. And there were way too many playable characters. But you go to some really memorable locations (esp. the dead sea, one of my favorite locations from any JRPG) and the atmosphere was (usually) very rich. I'd say it was my 3rd favorite PSX RPG.

I played CC first so that wasn't a problem for me, but after playing CT I do believe it to be a better game. They're both pretty good though.

There was a lot of backlash from fans of Chrono Trigger, because it wasn't a very good sequel (think reception of Fallout 2 > FO3). It was much more drawn out and angsty compared to CT which was extremely fast-paced and upbeat. And it had little to do with the plot of the original game besides namedropping and killing several major characters. What he said.
CC was "technically" strong. But when compared to Trigger, it was just another PSX JRPG. Way too easy to get sidetracked and miss out on all important characters, instead loading up on characters that don't matter.
Then again Chrono Trigger was so great, it's not good to compare it to many games. If Crono Cross was instead called "Wanky Angst JRPG Pirate looking kid w/ colors" it would have not been bashed as much.

QFT. Well put Hexpane, well put.
