Did you know that the video game companies consider buying used games a form of piracy? They say it is stealing money from them that they could use to make more games and are trying everything they can to stop game trading...

Citation needed.

I know some companies aren't thrilled about used-game sales (Eidos comes to mind), but I've never heard a position this dramatic. The first sale doctrine is pretty clear-cut in this country.

Here is an article about companies bitching about the resale of their games.  http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/06/04/BUDA17R8RG.DTL

We all know game companies would prefer us to buy new.

That's a light-year away from "game companies equate buying used to piracy." Used game sales lead to a drop in revenue. Piracy is a crime.

Piracy is a crime but it does the exact same thing used game sales do which is lead to a drop in revenue.

I like this one I found from an employee of epic games, it is from 2005 so it is old.

"If you walk into EB in the US, they try and sell you a second hand version of a game before a new one. I think that's bad. It would be fine if they share that revenue with us. They can also be marketing partners with us as well. We can have an official refurbished games policy. That's the problem. Those resold games use server resources, tech support. The majority of guys calling up saying "I don't have my serial number", I'm sure a lot of those are resold. It costs us money. Those customers think they paid for it, and they're entitled to support. The reality is, we didn't get paid. They didn't pay us."   http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5547

How many times have you called tech support for a console game?    Seems like he's talking more about PC games.

And really, they are looking at the glass half full.    How many people would pay $60 for their games if they knew there was no resale value on them?    Plenty of their sales come from people that know they can turn around and bring it back to Gamestop, here, wherever and actually get something for it when they are finished with it.    Plenty of their sales come from the value people generated through these resales.    Would they prefer that everyone waited until a game is a year or two old to purchase it after price drops and greatest hits versions are coming out?    Or get exposed to less of their product because they can't afford it?   People that rent movies and games don't pay them directly for the product either, but they are getting an awful lot of sales via that mechanism as well.    People that write books should really be pissed at libraries I suppose, they're just giving the product away.

I can understand complaining about piracy, actual theft.   Complaining about game trading and reselling and comparing it to theft is a very narrow and greedy outlook.

As I'm not a gamer, I only trade movies here.  I've sent out 3 BDs and 1 DVD, but have yet to receive anything in return.  My want list is languishing.  Since Goozex markets itself as a game trading site, I think that limits the number of people who come here to trade BDs, DVDs.  Perhaps adding the movie trading function in the marketing effort would bring more movie traders to the site.  (and maybe I'd get some of the items I wantSmile)

Hey everyone,

Lets keep this on topic about movie trading on Goozex.  I'm sure there is another thread about the ethics of used game trading.  Please don't promote or imply the support of piracy -- mods will delete those posts.

Thanks!

As someone who has become a heavy movie trader, I think focusing on forums and sites dedicated to movies would be a great place to advertise. A lot of sites also allow people to create lists of their collections. These are the type of sites Goozex needs to target. If it is by ad space, or working in conjunction for promotions. I don't use many myself, but it couldn't hurt for Goozex to do a bit of research and I'm sure you guys can find the larger movie dedicated sites.

I have only traded maybe 2 or 3 movies but have/will be receiving at least 30 movies. 15 are due to the free DVD trades. Big Smile

I frequently visit blu-ray.com's forums and check their site for new releases.  They have a very active community of people looking to acquire blu-rays, so there's a lot of interested people there.

I've been a member of DVDTalk.com for over 10 years.   They've got a large, active member base talking up movies and movie bargains; I'd recommend checking them out.

You could try advertising on Comingsoon.net.  I check out release dates for DVDs and Blurays there from time to time and they have a forum there. I don't participate in forum talk at all, but I think it could be a good place to advertise.

Errr...I suppose I could also suggest Gaia Online since they have a huge forum base.  It's not a movie community but it's more of an online hangout with an anime type theme. Its member base consists mostly of preteens to young adults; however, there are some older members there like me. I'm sure if the advertisement also gave out a free avatar item people would be all over it. However, there's also the possibility that doing this could bring over quite a few members who don't know how to use the site effectively (or how to ship things...).

the only other thing that has come to mind in light of movie trading recently for me has been that I do wish that there was some way to notify the first person in queue for something that a trade was available if they took it off of hold as someone had suggested.  Perhaps if there was a weekly or monthly automated email that did just that with the option to opt out of it under our  account settings?

PM me your email for a Lockerz invite... still have 20 to give out for Z list status):
