  • Gears of War (PC) I'm not sure I care

You shouldn't gears one was almost as lackluster as Uncharted 1/2. It didn't have many boss fights, and nothing to really break op the action. Gears 2 on the other hand, that is the single best TPS I have ever played... I'd suggest getting the second one instead...

I have a pretty big collection of games that I enjoy but I have a tendency to play a game for a few days and then get sick of it and to lately realize that I will probably never even go back to it then just send it off to somebody like Way f the Samurai 3 just came out and I sent it out the day after I got it new because I know I will never go back to it -- played 2 hours of it and traded it. (This game was horrible) I do that with most games because I dont want a huge stockpile of games that I will probably never even go back to. Good ones I keep for a while. If its a hundred pointer I will usually hold onto it for a while I noticed because I am in no hurry to get back the points invested into it back - plus it definitely wont lose any points while holding onto it while I wait to finish it. If its a fairly new game then I will probably rush through it and send it out within a couple weeks unless its a keeper.

For my list:

Remove:

  • Star Ocean - The Last Hope (360)
  • Halo 3 (360)
  • Mario Kart (Wii)

Add:

  • Dragon Age (360)

I've found a way to get through my backlog Big Smile

Kenny007 don't pay any attention to Gears of War.  It is a flaming turd on a disc.

For some reason I cannot bring myself to do that.  I very rarely re-acquire a game even if I intend to.  Some of the ps2 games I listed are ones I've scoured the area looking for or have bought off of eBay.  I won't be sending any of those out until I've actually finished them.  360 games seem to move quite quickly, so it might be worthwhile to adapt a strategy like DrJ079, but that requires work...

Oh, if I bought it off of Ebay, it isn't leaving for a long time. That means I actually wanted it badly enough to go out and get it with only a day or two's notice. (If I had someone from the states take receipt of games from Amazon.com so I could get them... well, I am never trading those things). And cheez, I know exactly what you mean with some of these PS2 games... hard to find and hard to let go of.

Then again having a backlog is a lot easier when you are still playing on a legacy system and you don't plan on upgrading any time soon, so you really don't need the newest thing every few months... you have time to go through a library (I have 150 unplayed PS2 games waiting for me).

Of course, the games I get off of goozex don't really depreciate that much either, since they are 1-200 pointers, so sending them back out and then ordering them again wouldn't be that smart fiscally speaking.

I have many that I still have to play. I usually pick them up when there are great deals (like the D2D Turns 5 - 5$ pc games....that was cool).

At that price you can usually take chances. Same goes for console games that have great deals at places like BB or Amazon.ca. It does create some sort of backlog but its not major. In the end, I simply always want something new at hand once I'm finished playing something.

Ahem...Goozex doesn't help me in my backlog :)

I don't think a game you keep around for a long time because you really wanted it and continue to play it counts as backlog though.    I don't think I'll ever get rid of the SF IV until I don't have a system to play it on anymore.      I actually haven't popped it in in a while, and don't mind seeing how badly it's dropped in points.    But I didn't list it as backlog, because it's really not.

For me, very few games fit into that category though.    Too many cool new games coming out and not enough time to keep playing old stuff.   With Bioshock 2, God Of War 3, Final Fantasy, and now Mass Effect 2 coming in the spring I still have no idea how I'm going to make it through the Fall releases I've grabbed in time for the new stuff I want to play coming out.   And there'll of course be some off the radar type stuff that ends up being great like Demon's Souls.   This is probably why I could care less that Sony dropped backwards compatibility.

Gears of War is a love it / hate it game. People either think it's one of the best games ever made, or one of the worst. Personally, I hated Gears of War one. I played 2 chapters of singleplayer, and I thought the multiplayer sucked. It was laggy, unpredictable, and it had specific ways about how to do stuff. If you didn't use the shotgun you died. I stopped playing it for 6 months, only to come back to it with a fresh slate. This time, instead of using the chainsaw constantly, after watching a few gameplay montages online, I noticed the shotgun is the best weapon to use. I came to realize that instead of my actually hating the game, it was actually one of the best games of all time. Fast paced, non-stop action, and simply fun. It's a game that grows on you... I honestly can't wait for Gears of War 3, and considering I hated Gears one for the longest time... That is quite odd.

Speak for yourself, he game itself is high quality, if you said that you personally didn't like it, and for a realistic reason, such as not liking the fact the shotgun is overpowered, or not liking third person, then yeah I wouldn't mind. But, saying that it is, "a flaming turd on a disk." Just goes to show you can't trust anyone for a legitimate opinion, not even mods... I always look at games I don't like with fresh eyes when other people like them. Why can't you do the same instead throwing petty insults at the game.

Might I suggest this for your mouth?

Kenny007:

  • GRID (PC) Coming in the mail
  • COD4 (PC) Played the hell out of MP, never got around to SP
  • Civ IV (PC) I'm not even sure there IS a completing this one
  • Psychonauts (PC) Haven't started this quirky, suggested game.

Just some comments on these:

Grid was a ton of fun and I'm not even the kind of person that usually plays racing games, nor did I have the computer at the time to make the game look good and run well.  Definitely give Grid a try.

The singleplayer in CoD4 was a lot of fun, but I didn't find it something that was fun the second time around.  You should definitely play the SP game at least once.

I initially didn't like Civ 4 very much because it seemed like they had dumbed it down from the originals.  After playing it for a while I actually like it a lot better.  In fact, I think I like it better than the great Alpha Centauri, though it's not quite as in depth as that.  Civ 4 is very accessible and very deep, but it can be addictive and hard to quit.

Psychonauts is not all it's cracked up to be.  The writing is clever, but the gameplay wasn't really that much fun.  It's the kind of thing that would have made a great TV series, but didn't make a tremendous game.

I can sympathize with your plight of MP games preventing you from playing SP games.  I'm in the same spot.  CoH, CSS, and TF2 take up most of my free time.

Was closer to the end of Batman than I thought.   Mark one off my backlog list.    I'll keep it around a little while longer, it's a great game and maybe I'll play some of the challenges which I've barely touched.    But I don't consider it backlog anymore, because I could trade it out tomorrow and not feel like I missed much.

Drops me to 4 PS3 games, and I'll likely finish the 1st playthrough of Borderlands shortly and have to decide whether to trophy whore the Platinum which will probably be pretty easy by that point.     Definitely back to a little more manageable.

Now I'm kind of wishing I had done the MW2 preorder, but I'm not paying $60 for it.   At least I'll have some good time to really get into Dragon Age: Origins without too much distraction.

Kenny, don't pay any attention to Cheez. He's just bitter that there's no rainbow ponies in the game. Pizza

Sorry.  It was a giant flaming turd.  The writing was just atrocious and the gameplay was just as bad.  Kenny007's, or anyone for that matter, time is better spent elsewhere.  However, if you like running around killing things with the characters screaming profanities (it honestly felt like a 13 year-old who's balls hadn't dropped yet wrote the script) and poorly implemented controls, then by all means give Gears of War a shot.  Shooters are a dime a dozen and Gears is an average shooter at best.
