3 of my top 10 least favorite movies;
Donnie darko
Butterfly effect
Primer
requiem for a dream is an honorable mention for overrated, but it doesn't have to do with time travel
in the bedroom and house of sand and fog also horrible and won awards/ get recommended a lot
To whoever recommend Primer...many kudos to you. Such a great movie, especially when you break down what actually goes on in that movie.
Donnie Darko is basically an experiment with the idea of a tangent universe (reality) to our own. The world is literally going to end in that movie if Donnie does not die by that plane engine.
Has anyone here seen Equilibrium by chance?
jrstriker12: IIRC - Salon did a great breakdown of the movie and all the references: http://dir.salon.com/story/ent/movies/feature/2004/07/23/darko/index.html IO9.com also did a good article on the philosphy behind Richard's Kelly's movies (Including Donnie Darko) - all which seem to involve alternate universes. http://io9.com/5398126/the-darko-mythos

I read the thing about it Salon did. They did a great job explaining Frank IMO.

I'm glad I could help. BTW- I have Darko sitting at home. Haven't watched it yet.
Mechazawa005: I-Weapon-X: Mechazawa005:Primer is another good one if anyone is looking for related film concerning time-travel. So is Back to the Future I could always understand Doc's rants in BttF 100% of the time. Primer went WAY over my head and made me do some extra reading to try and grasp concepts. Not saying I always want homework with my movies, but I can appreciate Primer's uncompromised approach and asking the audience to apply themselves in order to follow along. ...and IMO BttF was the better movie.

Time Bandits trumps all!
I know this is all about time travel, but with just the concept of time and our perception of it I think Memento does an excellent job. Pretty popular movie but on the off chance that some of you haven't seen it, thought I would recommend it.

A friend tricked me into watching part of that movie. I've never forgiven him.

Me.
I don't know about you guys... I had no clue what happened in Donnie Darko, and I've never seen the Director's Cut, but it still puts a lump in my throat every time I think about it.
Watching it the first time was like getting hit by a truck.
ericengler:The only people i've spoke with who have disliked this movie were those who were unable to understand it fully.
You know, I'm so sick and tired of people who say "you didn't like it because you didn't understand it." I understood the movie just fine and I didn't like it. I actually watched it because a friend of mine didn't get it and he wanted me to explain it to him. I wanted to turn the movie off half way through.
mrkekeru: Also the best time travel movies are Back to the Future, 12 Monkeys, and Groundhog Day.

12 Monkeys, YES.

I have actually never had a chance to see 12 Monkeys. How does it relate to something like Donnie Darko, in terms of time travel and philosophical ideas?
It's not as overtly, intentionally philosophical and overblown as Donnie Darko, but it does have some themes of perception of reality, sanity and memories in a more subtle way. It's entertaining because it's twisty, tightly-plotted (as much as a time travel movie can be) and has excellent use of foreshadowing, rather than blunt philosophical yammerings. If you have a netflix account, it's available for streaming right now.
Another strong recommendation for 12 Monkeys -- it is a great movie on several levels, and worth checking out for any sci-fi fan. The DVD has some great bonus content too, also highly recommended if you enjoy supplementary material and "making of" documentaries.
And for the record, I liked Donnie Darko and thought it was a fun (if totally overblown) movie. Worth watching the theatrical version, can't comment about the director's cut although I suspect having things spelled out would detract from the movie instead of adding value. The best part of the entire movie was Gary Jules' rendition of Mad World though... so I guess that says something.
I'll have to check it out then. I am a big fan of movies that go beyond the basic and add layers of complexity. I can't stand going to a big budget movie with nothing but special effects, watching it; and forgetting about it 10 minutes after getting home.

But... Time Bandits was a good movie? It's been awhile since I've seen it, but I remember it being pretty inoffensive and entertaining.
12 Monkeys by the same director is indeed really good. It has a really tight plot, and also springs some great twists that never feel cheap or contrived.
