Congrats, fahmishoed!

We're expecting our second in May and I'd have to say that my wife gamed harder after work than I've ever seen during the last few months of pregnancy and then about two months after delivery, waiting for the little guy to wake up to feed again.  For the first couple months it's just eat, sleep, poop, repeat.  After the first week you're a pro.

As for my own gaming habit as a father, I can't say it changed much.  I usually game after 8pm anyways, which is when our son (now 2 years) goes to sleep.  Sometimes I nab a quick match of CoD during lunch but that's maybe once a week.

I will second the advice to put the controllers up!  I've lost a thumb stick pad and countless headset cushions to tiny teeth...

I am married with 4 kids and I can find time to play an hour or so each night.  Lately it hasnt been as much due to the one not sleeping in her own bed but I am sure soon I will be playing more again.  Family definately takes time away from gaming but having one kid should not make it so you cant game any more.  To each their own I guess.

I cant dive into mmorpgs and such like I once did, but I have no problems getting gaming in. My daughter is almost 2 now.  I've definately cut back some (but probably not as much as I did in the transition from single to not to married).

I did have to make a few compromises, though.

Between the wife wanting to watch her shows and the little one watching her shows occasionally, I found it much easier to pick up a 24" 16:9 1080p computer monitor w/ HDMI hookups from Dell rather than wait for the TV to be available. I now have my 360/Computer all at my computer desk. I obviously sit much closer than I would with the TV, so its really not bad at all.

I picked up a nice set of surround sound headphones so that I can crank the volume up and not disturb the little one when she is sleeping.  It was actually quite an improvement in audio quality anyways.

I willingly give up an hour or two of sleep sometimes to get my gaming in after she is in bed. Sucks for me, but if that's what it takes...

If i do fire up a game while she is awake and content , I stick to stuff that can be paused/saved easily. I save the online stuff for when she is asleep.

She is happy, well cared for, and gets lots of attention. I do just as much of the changing/feeding/bathing/playing as the wife does as well.  So it can work.

Now.... my second one is on the way in February, so that may all change. We shall see!

As a gaming father of four, I can tell you that you absolutely can do both.

I found myself playing game online less, thanks to the whole having to pause a lot and fetch a bottle, change a diaper thing.

Mind what you play when the kids, even when infants are in the room.

Dont let your kids get into it too early, I made that mistake.

Most important, PLAY, you too need a break from the insanity. But dont play too much, try and enjoy being a father. There is a reason only people who dont have kids bash having kids.

Congrats.  i had my first back in December.  Its true the pause button comes into play ALOT.  That for me also means that online play is pretty much non existent.
My wife also asked that I not play violent games while the kid is around.
I also found that my gaming has been cut down to only about an hour or so a night, usually after everyone goes to sleep, since you have to get your time in hanging out with and taking care of the kid and the rest of the family.

All in all, you get used to it.  Have fun, and congrats again.

Assuming your name includes your actual gender, that's quite impressive.  I'm surprised I didn't see you on Oprah Wink

Yep, low volume at night, less smack talking on XBL, less time to play.

Wouldn't change a thing though :-)

You'll play more Wii games that use only the Wii Remote. Baby on the left, Wii Remote on the right.

I just found out that we are having a boy! I would have been very happy either way, but I think this makes my transition into parenthood a little easier. Thank you everyone for the congratulations and well wishes. Best of luck to all of you as well.

I have my first kid on the way in April, my question to you guys is....When you had your first kid did it change anything about your gaming habits? If so how so?

Yes. Be prepared to turn down the volume (turtle beach headsets ftw) and press pause a lot.

I have only managed to play about 25-30 mins of Dragon Age, because my kids are so damn loud all the time, I can't hear the story.  I finally just gave up, and decided to wait until next week to play when they are at their dad's house. Super Angry  I should invest in some headphones, but they're annoying and I like my surround sound.

Doesnt DA: O have subtitles? Turn em on and game away.
