I hope your newborn is not colicky, i have a six week old right now and she is very colicky.  My game playing time went waaaay down.  for the first 4 weeks i didn't even get to touch the ps3 or xbox.  Now it's only about 30 min every couple of nights if i even get the chance.

Colicky baby is tough.  They take alot of time and stress you out.  They also stress the wife out so you have to take care of her too.  Sometimes video games have to take the back seat but i just keep telling myself its not forever.  I'll just build up a nice library and when the colic goes away im sure ill be able to play more often.

It does get way better.  I love gaming with my kids.  My son and I are playing Tales of Vesperia together and my daughter really wants to fight in the battle too (she is 6).  I only have 2 controllers or I would let her play more often.  Now I only let her play with my son (on tales) if I know we are in an area where she wont die.

I have my first kid on the way in April, my question to you guys is....When you had your first kid did it change anything about your gaming habits? If so how so?

Yes. Be prepared to turn down the volume (turtle beach headsets ftw) and press pause a lot.

And to use subtitles more.

Congrats on the addition to your family!

We're expecting our first end of December, beginning of January. I realize with the time to adjust, get a new routine going and all for the first 2 or 3 months, my gaming time will go way down. It's okay, I realize that. I too think I'm going to use the handhelds a lot more for some reason. It's going to help that my wife loves gaming as well so we'll be understanding of each other on that end lol.

There are many sites out there that give you info on how to handle one of your favorite hobbies and being a parent (almost like a support group Stick out tongue)

Grats bro, no kids here but lots of friends who do.  Depends on the baby.  Some babies sleep straight through, others are up ever 2 hours.

I hear the sleep issue is a way bigger change to lifestyle than gaming time

The thing that gets me is games that do not allow PAUSE!!!  Demon's Souls and Sacred 2... I've had some deaths in both thanks to no pause button and real life issues requiring immediate attention

This.

I have two young kids and a job. I only get to play when the rest of the family is asleep.

I am severely backlogged on games right now since I can only play for maybe an hour a day at most, realistically 4 hours a week maybe. I just got through Scribblenauts last night (only skipped the levels that are "in the dark" because they were just annoying). Next I have inFamous, next Uncharted 2. Once I get through those I plan on getting God of War Collection... and by the time I get to it, it ought to be 100 points on Goozex ;)

I really want kids, at least 2 or 3!

I plan to train them in the ways of Hardcore Gaming, and we'll form our own Clan of Awesome!

Grats!

They won't interrupt your gaming once they're old enough to do it with you! Though for the first few years you might be pretty busy!

Two of my four kids are really into gaming already.  We have a DS and a laptop for the kids and they each spend at least an hour gaming.  Both my kids love playing Spore on the laptop, if you get lucky enough you can start gaming with your kid really young.  My son has been playing on my daughters DS since he was two and recently he turned three and he is already using a computer and playing treehouse games and Spore without any help.  It is crazy I go up to the kitchen to check up on him and he has turned on Spore and is in the middle of raiding another animals nest for food.  Kids are lots of work but they are more than worth it.

Congratulations and good luck.

I am not sure that the goal is to make your kids into gamers :) That's like saying "they're watching a ton of TV every day, I'm so proud!" It should be more like a reward.

Though I've got to admit that it's fun to see what the really little ones will get into unassisted. Gotta watch out for that Internet though. :)

Well when kids gaming involves a lot of learning such as abc's and reading then there is no reason to not want to get them into it.  Of course like anything you do want moderation.  As for the internet yes once your child gets over a certain age you really need to keep good tabs on them.  My brother in law who lives in my basement has his daughter every weekend.  A month or so ago I was down there visiting with them and she was on some site where you create an avatar and can talk to people.  I couldnt believe that he didnt care about her being on the site and didnt seem to mind that there could be creepers on the site.  Some parents just dont care and it is very scary.  Once my kids start getting older I will be installing parental filters and be keeping a very very close eye on their internet usage.

I have a 120 pound saint bernard so just make sure she can't trip over cables and destroy everything

I have a 100 pound black lab and two cats, I already have that covered. My one kitten likes to turn off the surge protector that my tv and all my gaming systems are hooked up to.

babies look real delicate, I can hold em for a few minutes but I barely move and can't wait to pass one off to my girlfriend.

Kids are a blast once they can play basketball.
