The problem here is that a well intentioned law is being exploited by the overly sensitive, or the bored.  I'm inclined to think the latter.

You're ignoring the fact that 'sweetie' can be used as a derogatory/demeaning term.  There are plenty of instances where it can be used inappropriately.  I understand it's not in the example you've provided, but I've had to listen to how it is since my fiancee worked as a student in TImmins as a forestry summer student a number of years ago.

Who knew this would turn you into an advocate for sexual harassment Yes

I agree with hexpane though, you should definitely get that removed from your personnel file and from your wife's as well.  A company of that size probably has an HR department that's on their toes and can/would use this against either of you.

In the countless seminars I've had to take during college (RA related stuff) and work related ones, they always mentioned knowing your audience and if you think something might be slightly offensive (or off the collar as you referred to it) save it for outside the workplace.

I see where you're coming from here, certainly not acceptable there, and a quick review of your account would bring many to the same conclusion.  However, if you were to visit this workplace, many of my coworkers are old enough to be my parents, some possibly even grandparents, and their way of interacting with one another is a product of working with one another for 20-50+ years.  To be told suddenly that they're being 'indecent' by a lawyer half their age, speaking in law riddles ("There's no way to ever know for sure who's offended, there's no black and white law here..."), had ME offended...lol don't get me started on how pissed off THEY were to hear that.

Two totally different examples here, and in our case, sexual harassment doesn't even remotely fit the bill...save for that one lone ranger without a friend in the world...hiding...somewhere...watching my every move!

It'd be one of those awkward, don't touch their back and keep your arms wide, sort of hugs.  I'd hate to get sued.

If the company does nothing, even for ridiculous complaints like the one against me, they become liable.

And that is a big reason to ensure your record is completely spotless.  Don't let them have an easy out

Gosh, this really puts in perspective about those times with the red-headed intern under the desk.  I'm a changed man!  Never again. . .

 PS. Especially the "Sweetie" thing

When HR called you in, you should have called her sweet ***.
