They are two very, very, VERY different games. While both games have an emphasis on co-op, L4D is essentially a straight shooter where as Borderlands is all about exploration and leveling up and finding awesome loot. Nothing against L4D but Borderlands is way more up my alley!
Wildo88: my favorite weapon i found was a level 10 ish smg that fired 4 shots at once, at 19 dmg per shot, and had an 82 shot clip or so... accuracy was around 50, so not great from more than 30 feet or so, but if people get close to you it just mows through them... the fire rate is around 9 too, so I think I go through a whole clip in a few seconds... also, I have had fun with the shotguns that shoot rockets... not very effective it seemed in a hectic firefight, but fun to play around with while exploring...

my favorite is a pistol with 42 damage and +%500 burst fire; ive found stronger pistols but none that act like really accurate machine guns
I would suggest Borderlands. I played the heck out of Left for Dead last winter. It was awesome. But once you play through all the chapters a dozen times and get most of the achievments, it loses its appeal. Left for Dead would have been SO much better if it had some kind of leaderboards. Some stat tracking, SOMETHING to compare yourself to friends and see how you improve. Without that, playing through the maps lacks any sense of reward after a while.
Now Borderlands is constantly rewarding the player. New items, 4 different characters to develop, multiple playthroughs, etc. Borderlands will take much longer to hit that wall where you feel there is nothing left to accomplish.

That is fast. I am still a lowly level 4 Hunter :) Can you really do any point distribution before level 5? If so, I can always start my campaign over and fix anything I may have missed.

You don't get your first skill points until level 5 anyways, so you have nothing to worry about :)
Plus, the game allows you to reallocate your points by spending some money, so you can't really ever mess up your guy.
That is another part of Borderlands that I love : the fact that you can change your name, color, and skill points basically at any time is awesome. The only way you could really screw yourself as far as I can tell would be if you sold an item by accident and then logged out so it was no longer on the buyback screen.
I would love to pick up Borderlands but I'm waiting right now as I'm going through Dragon Age which seems like it could take up a lot of my time right now. If I don't get Borderlands by the time I'm done with DAO I'll get it on the Goozex Exchange.
As for Left 4 Dead 2 it was a lot of fun but so was the first one. I'll wait until it goes on sale and pick it up cheap. Although Kmart will be selling it for $40 new. If I had a job that would be one heck of a deal.

Don't you just love when developers look out for the sanity of their players?
