I think Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is going to surprise everyone and be one of the best multiplayer games of the year, what do you guys think?
I don't think it's going to surprise PC gamers. We didn't have access to the original, know from a long history of BF games that they're all pretty stellar, and most importantly, many seem to be waiting for BF:BC2 as a substitute for the nonsense that MW2 is pulling.
I'm personally pretty pumped for the title and am waiting for Amazon to list the limited edition for my preorder dollars. Gamestop has it, but I worry about actually having a title come game day from them, even if I preorder.

If we already know about a game in 2009, can we really call it a "sleeper?"

This.
If we're talking about 2009, I think Demon's Souls is a good candidate.

A sleeper in the sense that most people aren't highly anticipating it.
I disliked Bad Company, so I have no hopes for this game. I would like to see Arc Rise Fantasia or Fragile be one of the sleeper hits to come out next year.

I'm quickly inclined to agree. I hadn't heard of the title at all prior to the thread opening up about it. Even then, I didn't bother to read the thread initially, but when it was noted elsewhere it was a PS3 game, I just threw it on my requests lists for kicks.
Only after reading what quickly became a double digit page thread did I realize this game might appeal to me. Amazon's $80 for $40 deal pushed me over the edge and I bought it. So far, I'm pleased.
Sleeper hit refers to a particular product that gains unexpected success beyond expectations. Battlefield: BC2 is expected to be a successfull game, given that the previous games in the series have done so well, so it would not qualify as a sleeper hit.
You generally won't hear about a sleeper hit much before its release, but you'll hear about it from your friends as it gains popularity and a following through social networking, not media advertising.
I think Demon's Souls and Borderlands could compete for 2009's sleeper hit at this point, though I haven't played either myself.

Borderlands got some early hype when they claimed 'OVER 500,000 weapons!!' in an article I read late last year, and I was following it pretty heavily. Then again, I dont think either of my closer gamer friends knew about it, so maybe I just follow gaming news closer than them and it could be a sleeper. I still think it had some decent coverage though.
DS though, what a surprise (to me anyways, maybe I was oblivious on this one...I don't tend to follow PS3 news as heavily, and saw nothing on Qore).

i knew the game was coming out but it flew completely under my radar; the game is freaking awesome though
Yeap, Demon's Souls came from nowhere and became my GOTY.
But for 2010? I would say a Rage, Enslaved, Inversion, Metro 2033 or even Scivelation. Bet most don't even know some of those games. I'm a shooter fan, so i keep track of these, but one of those is bound to be a sleeper hit in some sort, my money is on Metro 2033 or Rage easy if done right.

Pumped about 'Rage', don't know of the rest.
Though I did forget about Rage until you mentioned it again, so I'd not be surprised if that one just comes out of 'nowhere' for me too.
i'm really struggling to think of a sleeper hit. DS is the only one i can think of. Everything else seemed either anticipated by the masses (Batman) or so well advertised that it is hard to qualify as a sleeper (borderlands). I still have that horrible song from the commercial stuck in my head.

And it is impossible to 'predict' a sleeper unless you are clairvoyant. The sleeper hit is the one that takes everyone by surprise as being good but still doesn't make a huge splash.
mrkekeru: timpysan: This. If we're talking about 2009, I think Demon's Souls is a good candidate. Demon's Souls is not a sleeper hit at all, it is way, way too popular to qualify. I don't know if you remember, but alot of people were actually importing the asian version before it was announced in the US because of the huge hype it amassed. Atlus only picked it up because of that hype. It might be a sleeper for a lot of Goozex users but for the gamer populace at large I think it was way too well-known. And in my opinion, it's the most overrated game of 2009. And it is impossible to 'predict' a sleeper unless you are clairvoyant. Not a lot of people, a niche of hardcore gamers were importing it.
