What the "biggest" release or game was seems very relative to me.  There's many titles you make arguments for based on their influence, number of sales, amount of money made, or any combination of these but any one of things would be highly dependent on the time of their release and the market conditions of the time.

There's a couple different titles you could come up with  as far as pure profit goes depending on whether you adjust for inflation.  If you were to base "number of sales" just on pure distribution, computer Solitaire would the most popular game ever.  And which game had the most influence is, of course, a very subjective affair.

I recall a 4 minute story when Halo 3 was released (I was in Seattle at the time, so big news for microsoft is newsworthy for the region).  The story stated that based on pre-sales, polls of gamers, and the amount spent promoting, that Halo 3, up to that time, was by and far the 'biggest' release ever.

MW2 is not gonna be big based on its hype, its gonna be based on what new things implemented from the past game that we have played and been playing will be included this time around.

For me it was Halo 2. I remember being in high school and this kid in my class always was talking about it.

No one's mentioned Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. For me it was probably my most anticipated game ever, and it was sold out all over where I live. I actually managed to find one on its launch day at Toys R Us, through sheer blind luck because they didn't put them out until like 5 pm (I didn't know this). I wandered in planning on just filling out a rain check and found the beginning of a line in the videogame department, and was informed they'd be bringing them out in half an hour or so. Even managed to snag one of the rare golden cartridges.

I'd never pre-ordered a game before so it was a foreign concept to me. I still rarely do, unless there's a really good pre-order deal (and I'm sorry, but most of them aren't) and I'm going to buy the game day one anyway.

Ocarina of Time at least deserves a mention, seeing as how it's considered one of the best games of all time. Not sure where it ranks on overall sales charts...

To date, Devil May Cry 4. I adored 1, 2 Made Me Cry, 3SE was heaven in hell, and I was pumped as **** for 4.

It lived up enough to my expections but didn't blow me away. Except for Dante's new sexy design :O

I say the most votes to Halo 2 or SMB 3

mrkekeru:

Pong wasn't anywhere near the first video game though.

But it was both the first coin-op videogame and the first home release video game. Everything before that was more or less only played by the people who made them and a VERY select outside audience. When pong was put in that first bar, there probably weren't 1000 people in the world who had ever played a video game.

Second attempt.

Has anyone seen the new Wal-Mart MW2 commercial where the guy drives through his garage?  Just saw it last night and at the end it said "MW2 is best played on the xbox 360" (or something similar).

To be on topic, if Maskim's recollection is correct regarding Halo 3 I think MW2 will surpass it.  This game is everywhere.

My own personal "biggest game release" was FFX which convinced me to buy a PS2 even though I hadn't owned a system since the Genesis and had never played an RPG.  I was not disappointed.

My first thought on the trailer:  "Buy this game e-thugs"

My second thought: "Damn, that was put together well.  Where's my copy of MW2?"
