From a sales standpoint, Halo 3 is the largest MEDIA (games, movies, etc.) release of all time. $300 million IIRC. In an article for MW2, an analyst predicted MW2 to generate $500 million in first week sales!

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/modern-warfare-2-to-exceed-USD500m-in-first-week-sales

The same article suggests that Starcraft 2 could be huge as well... I don't think $500 million, but $200 easily.

SC2 will be epic and I personally have been salivating for the past year, but I don't think that PC games get nearly as much media exposure as console games.

I'm expecting the third World War upon release.  The game will flop so hard in the eyes of the Korean masses that have kept the original title mainstream for so long that nothing short of war will satisfy their thirst for revenge.

With a title as big as Starcraft (even though I personally was never interested in the game), the expectations are so high that the above isn't entirely crazy.

There are a lot of answers to this question. But i know for MW2 my Gamestop will have cops/people helping park cars. And this store is not in a mall,i been to a lot of midnights and never seen cops at one well maybe a quick drive-by to check in. Now how many people show up i guess we will see,i may just wait till tuesday to grab it don't know if i want to deal with a lot of people outside in the cold.

My Gamestop is doing an event in conjunction with our local National Guard at the Salisbury, MD Armory. It involves a tournament, live music, free food and drink, supposedly the Dale Jr. Nationwide series National Guard car, lots of goodies and door prizes. It appears it will be epic.

Sounds fun, wish mine would do something like that. All we get is some jimmy John's and pepsi.I heard something about laser tag but i think it is for another store."Pre Rings" start at 8 so we are going to need something to pass the next 4 hours.

I read somewhere recently that MW2 is expected to be the biggest video game release of all time.  This made me chuckle a little (even though it will be big) but it got me thinking.  I googled a few things but only found lists based on number of units sold.  I am wondering what you think is the biggest video game release of all time based on hype/impact.  I came up with a few although I know i'm missing a ton.  Obviously the original Mario was huge.  Starcraft revolutionized the PC for me as far as gaming.  The national student's GPA dropped .5 after the release of Halo 2 for Xbox.  But I can't really think of a solid winner.  Anyone?

I saw this thread and didn't read any of the responses before i wrote this so if someone already said it im sorry.

The biggest video game release of all time is PONG.

Its what really started everything videogames.  Think about it computers were first ONLY DATA CRUNCHING MACHINES, NOTHING MORE NOTHING LESS. then someone thought "hey i could be entertained by this."  EVERY GAME out there, no check that, every game system out there has it origins with the grand master of them all PONG.  PONG is the adam and eve of video games.  Someone might put up a fight that Pac Man was bigger because of the sheer society enveoping mentality that it created but if your going by that then World of Warcraft has a good argument.  I just look at it from a historical standpoint and am glad someone had that little white box bouncing back and forth between those two bars.

Pong wasn't anywhere near the first video game though.

You remind me of a friend of mine who lives to argue.

I got the impression that's what the internet was for.

PS I hate everything, especially video games.

Now you have my mission statement in a single post.

Well ... I grew up when *most* shows were already in color, but back then only the coveted living room TV was color for most people, and the auxiliary TV (if you had more than one) was <13" B&W.

Someone might put up a fight that Pac Man was bigger because of the sheer society enveoping mentality that it created but if your going by that then World of Warcraft has a good argument.

From Wiki:   According to the Davie-Brown Index, Pac-Man has the highest brand awareness of any video game character among American consumers, recognized by 94 percent of them.

More brand awareness than Mario himself.   Come on, there was a friggin song, a top 10 song.   It was the most putrid thing ever, but because it was about Pac Man people loved that crappy thing.   There was a cartoon.   Lunchboxes.   T Shirts.   Toys.   They made digital watches of the game, and they were horrible, and people still played them because it was pac man.   It's been ported to every video game console in the history of ever practically.

Another quote from Wiki:  Anticipation for the game was high.[2][6] Goldman Sachs analyst Richard Simon predicted the sale of 9 million units during 1982, which would yield a profit of $200 million.

$200 million dollars of profit - in 1982!!!

It coming to the Atari 2600 had to be the most hyped video game event ever.   Maybe your mom knew the Halo release date, but I'd bet just about everyone in the country knew Pac Man was hitting the 2600.   It moved consoles that were retailing for like $200 and played games that looked terrible compared to their arcade counterparts.   And again, that's $200 in 1982 dollars.

For all games, including those who were bundled with a system, Wii Sports (50 million) and Super Mario Brothers (40 million) take the prize.

For games that were not bundled with a console, the winner is surprisingly Wii Play (24 million). The fact that no one really bought it for the game, but rather the controller isn't lost on me.

When I was little, the only place I ever really watched cable was at my grandpa's house, and I would usually watch it on the black and white TV in the basement, becuase the parents were talking or whatever in the living room where the color TV was.  I watched Doug on Nickelodeon for quite a while before I saw it on a color TV, and the fact that the characters were crazy colors was completely surprising.

back to the topic at hand, Super Mario 3 was pretty hyped for me... I remember bringing the box in for show an tell for elementary school...

Controller = $40.00 Wii Play = $50.00; why not spend the extra $10 for the combo?

i later learned it was cause the games sucked, but i was able to trade that in with another crappy wii game and get a brand new game free back when GS was running a promo

Pizza guys are getting worse and worse looking. I guess all the good ones went into porn.
