I remember doing absolutely nothing in class the day Halo 2 came out. Kids had brought in the manuals to read during class and two of my teachers were out at midnight to get the game.

Biggest media-wise: Halo 3. My mother hates videogames and even she knew the release date.

Biggest money-maker: Probably GTA IV.

At the time, Halo 2 was pretty huge. I remember talking to an old man on the phone who had bought an Xbox just so he could play it. According to him, it was "Something else!" Wink

If we are talking about how many people want to buy something, I have no idea, because I haven't been paying attention, but that would be easy to verify (as in, check the numbers). I remember a retarded amount of hype for Halo 2 and 3 but I didn't care in the slightest. The games that I was hyped for the most before they came out were Ratchet: Deadlocked, MadWorld, and Brutal Legend, and all 3 of them turned out to be really disappointing, so I guess I leanred my lesson. Right now I'm looking forward to Fallout New Vegas and Bayonetta.

If we mean how much impact a game has on the industry, as in how it affects game design (e.g. the effect Super Mario Bros. had on platformers, DMC had on action games, Tetris on puzzles, etc.)  I can tell you this: MW2 will have absolutely no effect on anything except the publisher's wallets, the entire industry is already ridiculously oversaturated with generic console FPSes and this won't change a damned thing, even if it does turn out to be as good as everyone hopes.

There are a lot of answers to this question. But i know for MW2 my Gamestop will have cops/people helping park cars. And this store is not in a mall,i been to a lot of midnights and never seen cops at one well maybe a quick drive-by to check in. Now how many people show up i guess we will see,i may just wait till tuesday to grab it don't know if i want to deal with a lot of people outside in the cold.

As far as hype, I think, as stated, it HAS to be Halo 3. As far as day 1 sales, it very well might be MW2. The release of SMB1 was not that big at all. I don't think you remember things clearly... SMB3 was big, but things are on a whole other level now. Games were considered toys then. Pretty much everyone now knows gaming IS the biggest form of media. I don't think anyone blamed a bad box office week on SMB3 or GTA. They certainly did for Halo 3. Final Fantasy VII was probably the biggest back when gaming was a niche market. I preordered mine the day it was announced for US release, which was, I believe 11 months in advance. By the time it came out, the local EB had something like 130 preordered copies. They couldn't fill all of the PREORDERS untill the third or fourth shipment. And unlike the stupid ****ing Wii, those people actually wanted to PLAY the game, not sell it on ebay.

The only releases that stick out in my head as being monumental releases in terms of actual hype and effects on gaming was either Mario 3 or Mortal Kombat.  Those really broke the mold in terms of advertising and excitement of the gaming community plus showing that gaming isn't just for kids.   Anything  past that from then to now seems to be more of a "let's get preorders for limited supplies of MW2/Halo/GTA" cash grab on an oversaturated market.   Maybe I'm just old though.

Biggest releases of all time have to be nailed down to four, maybe 5 games tops.  Halo 2 and 3 are #1 and 2 all time easy, followed by GTA4 or a GTA:SA and of course SMB3 was huge when I was a kid, but nothing even closed to what games are now on the media.

I see a lot of people are REALLY undeestimating Modern Warfare 2's upcoming sales and hype.  Hype isn't as big cuase a lot of big games have comed out lately, but not even Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, Infamous, ODST or Borderlands will match it or stop it.   It already has 2.4 MIllion pre-orders!!  If you follow game sales, preorders usually take about 60-70 percent of a games day one sales, so I easily expect it to sell possibly 3 Million on day one.  Thats is huge for any media.  This is my speculation of course, but don't be shocked if it hits this, thus making ti the biggest all time, but the deletion of the Party Chat system is hurting it more than it would seem, I almost thought of not getting it, and I have played every COD in history.

My Gamestop is doing an event in conjunction with our local National Guard at the Salisbury, MD Armory. It involves a tournament, live music, free food and drink, supposedly the Dale Jr. Nationwide series National Guard car, lots of goodies and door prizes. It appears it will be epic.

Great thing about modern warfare 2 is that in a year's time, it'll be the most traded in game ever too.  I know at most of the second hand stores around here there are a million copies of MW1.  So if MW2 sells millions of copies upon release, plus a steady flow after that, this'll be great for flipping later on.  And let's not forget the PC crowd that's gonna rage on when they get it :D

I just cancelled my pre-order and resubmitted it so I could use my $40 Amazon credit. Nothing wrong with only paying $19.99 out of pocket. xD

Hoping for MW2 to fail, but I'm quite sure it wont.  Still, I too agree that it is being somewhat overshadowed by some other killer titles currently, not to mention the bad press it's getting (PC abuse, the terrorism level, etc).  Still, I don't think the MW release was the biggest, unless we're strictly talking about dollars.

I'm personally going to suggest Goldeneye.  IIRC there were a bunch of commercials for it at the time, and I was pretty pumped.  This was before I really cared about the interwebs and hype was really few and far between.  The game itself was rather revolutionary too, pushing consoles forwards towards where we are now.

GTA is another fine example.

This is the same deal I went for.  Release Day Shipping FTW!!

I think Final Fantasy VII has to rank up towards the top of one of the most hyped/media covered games. I think Sony more than Square was pushing this game just to sell more PlayStations, and it worked. For months before its release you couldn't watch TV for more than 15 minutes without seeing a commercial for FFVII.

I didn't think the $40 was credited until MW2 shipped?

Last night on X-Play or Attack of the Show (dont remember which) they said that as of right now MW2 was the most preordered game of all time. They think that this game may become the biggest game release of all time if  the trend stays up with all of the preorders.
