Catastrophic: bill219117: all im saying is gamestop soemtimes rip you off i had to go there 3 times jsut for one game not workig they replaced it with another used game and that didnt work so the 3rd time i went back i got another game and to my surprise it worked if im going to game stop again its jsut going to be to buy new items The fact that you don't have to pay for each copy you are getting is the extent of Gamestop's guarantee. In my experience from Gamestop, the only time they have tested anything is when I brought in a console. No game I've brought in, no matter how new was ever tested. My last trip there I brought in about 10-12 games and all they did was open each case to make sure there was a disc inside, they didn't even bother to look at the bottom of the discs.

Yeah, we don't test games at all. That is the reasoning behind the 30 day guarantee. If a game looks scratched up we charge a refurb fee and send it to the refurb center for conditioning.
You are allowed to look at a disc before you buy it, as well. I would always suggest that when buying used from any establishment.

Yup. That's something I'm a stickler about. I like to buy used whenever I can, but I always check the disc before buying. If it's not to your standard, ask for another copy, if they don't have it you may need to find another store or pony up the cash and buy new.

Really? Every time I've brought in games to gamestop, they have always checked my discs, one was a bit dusty. so they declined that one. Someone isn't doing their job right.

Yeah, it's Gamestop. I don't go there expecting too much responsibility or professionalism unless its a manager, and even then its iffy. Sorry Maf.

You have to find the right store. Sadly there are usually only one or two per district. (Sometimes complete districts for those with a damn good DM).
I think the real answer to this question is simply that it depends on which one you go to. There are some Gamestops where the employees care and actually know what they are doing and what they are talking about. Unfortunately, in my experience most of the time this is not the case.
I once got a copy of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith used from gamestop, and I suppose I should have known something was wrong when I saw it was in a regular DVD case, but they opened the case, looked at the disc before putting it in the case, and gave it to me. When I got home with it I discovered a scratch....a DEEP scratch...the deepest scratch I'd ever seen on a blu-ray. It literally looked like someone had taken a rusty nail and forcefully dragged it across the surface of the disc. To my surprise, the game worked flawlessly for about 60% of the game (a testament to blu-ray's lasting ability, perhaps), but only then stopped working correctly.
When I took the game in to complain and get a refund, they took one look at the case after listening to my story and said "Oh, yeah..." and then opened the case and looked at the disc for a second, the look on the guy's face could only be described as if he had just lost a bet for $10. I got a refund since they had no other copies (yes, it doesn't seem possible now with all the copies of GH:A that they can't even sell now, but this was a while ago) I got a refund.
The Guarantee is only a guarantee that if the game doesn't work they'll find a copy that does or refund your money. For more information on Guarantees, listen to Chris Farley's brilliant exposition about them in the film Tommy Boy.
I could tell you some true horror stories about the way Gamestop truly functions at almost every location, but needless to say I'm not exactly a fan. I haven't set foot in one of their stores for at least a few months, and I think the last time I did so I was looking for very cheap DVDs.
Some cautionary advice about Gamestop:
1. Ask to test a system out in the store if you are going to buy it used from Gamestop.
The policy of the store is to take pretty much any system in any condition if someone wants to trade it in, providing they can turn a profit even if they have to have the system "fixed". I've heard some frightening tales of Xboxes infested with roaches being taken by Gamestop, and cleaned up and re-sold, untested -- it is IMPERATIVE that you make sure the system is in full working order and does not look to be cpmpletely messed up before you purchase any system from them, regardless of any guarantee. A guarantee won't comfort you when you find a dead rat roasting in your 360.
2. Ask to see the game disc you are purchasing before you actually purchase it.
Being that they keep all the games in flimsy sleeves in drawers behind the counter at Gamestop, and rarely ever really take a good look at the disc before handing it to you, this can sometimes save a trip or two if the game is actually scratched up.
3. Never pre-order or buy new from Gamestop.
Wait...what? why? Well, ask anyone who's ever been a Gamestop employee, and they will tell you why -- it's because in most cases, you're not really buying a NEW game. Employees of Gamestop are given the "privelige" of playing new games, sometimes before released, by "renting them" temporarily from the store. These "rented" copies are often the reserved copies of new games that are reserved by the customers with pre-orders and the like. This means if you pre-order games at Gamestop, chances are better than with other stores that you're getting what amounts to a USED COPY of the game. This explains why some customers sometimes complain about scratches on their brand new game that they pre-ordered. "Maybe someone at the company played my copy before sending it out!". Nope, it was a Gamestop employee. Sorry.
I could go on, but yeah...point is...with Gamestop it's buyer beware -- on everything the store has to offer.
For the latest news on Games, Movies, and everything geeky!
They rip me off every time a go there, and get this i bought a brand new game!!! and it was torn to pecies. i got my money back though, so i really don't go there as much as i used to.

The policy is actually to test all systems before they are traded in. This includes testing silver and blue discs in PS2s, etc etc.
I have absolutely nothing against gamestop except for the piss poor service. The employees just stand around at the desk and seem to do nothing as there is always a LONG line there and guy at the counter is never waiting on anyone (at least thats whats its like at my Gamestop). I have never received a scratched up or unplayable game and for that I am thankful but they do need to make their trade in prices a little bit more reasonable. Thats is the main reason why goozex is supreme.
From what I understand, they don't actually test anything. They sell it to you and if you bring it back, then they know it doesn't work.

Everyone rips you off sometimes.
I stopped buying used from gamestop when i started using goozex, games are usually cheaper here and the games i've gotten in have been well to say the least worked perfectly fine. on the back of the disc i found some fingerprints but clean the cd and poof gone some minor scratches but you had to look at it just right in the light to see it.
Gamestop's end i bought Battlefront for my regular xbox thankfully i modded my xbox and copied the data to the hard drive otherwise it goes very slow in menus sounds are usually prolonged during that time frame and when you look at the disc it looks like it got into a fight with a cat...
I find the real rip-off on selling used games at gamestop, most new games will get you between $20-25 for the regular edition which you spend $60 on, then they flip it around and sell it for $54.99 plus tax so the store can make $30 profit. i know people who call it recycling and happy they got $30 for the collectors edition of fear 2, 2 months after they spent like $76 on it...
