Do you invert your axes in FPS or 3rd person games with camera control?

  • I don't invert either axis. (47.5%)
  • I invert the Y-axis only. (49.2%)
  • I invert the X-axis only. (0%)
  • I invert both axes. (3.3%)
  • Total Votes: 120

I'm playing Wind Waker currently, and it's driving me nuts that the X-axis is inverted, but the Y isn't; both completely opposite of how I usually prefer my axes.  Curious as to what other people's preferences are.  On 3rd person games, I can usually eventually adapt after awhile (like FFXII), but FPS are virtually unplayable for me if I can't set my axes the way I want them.

I cant play without the Y-Axis inverted. The lack of this option made Silent Hill: Homecoming unplayable. It only allowed inversion while aiming. Horrible to lack the option these days

Being that I spend the 90's playing almost exclusively FPS, I expect moving my mouse forward to have me look up ... anything else screws with me.  I constantly remap flight controllers when I can.  Or ... I die, as I did when playing the PSP demo for the new Star Wars game ;)

I like when up is up and down is down.  I cant stand when the axis is inverted for either x or y.  However if a game has the axis inverted (I think the new star ocean one did) I am to lazy to see if I can change it in the settings.  If it was a FPS with an inverted axis I would probably throw the game in the garbage.

I'm the same way for everything except flight games.

If I play an FPS on a PC with a mouse, up is up, down is down.  When I play on a console, I need the Y-axis inverted, or I am absolute garbage.  I think I spent so much time playing flight sims in the early 90's, that if a game requires some sort of stick, it has to be inverted.

No. But I always invert my X-Axis. I like to trick my opponents when I move my thumb left, my character turns right!

Seriously, though, Up is Up and Down is Down. Except in flight games. Pull back to go up and push down to go down. I used to be so good at Ace Combat 04...best one of the series!

I'm the same way.  In some titles (Battlefield for instance), anything on the ground is normal, anything in the air is inverted.  Just seems necessary when in the air.

Unfortunately, the constant switching between the two has led to a few horrific digital crashes...

I have to invert my Y-axis, too.  Not sure why -- I never played flight sims, and I didn't realize it was a problem for me (I always thought I just sucked) until I played Descent 3, and suddenly played really well! I sucked at Goldeneye and other N64 FPS games even before I played Descent 3, so it wasn't a case of "getting used to it."  I think my brain is just wired to think that way when it comes to camera control.

It's true whether the game is an FPS, 3rd person, whatever -- if I'm controlling a dude, the Y axis needs to be inverted.  The only time it's not true are games where I'm simply moving over a map -- that's normal.  But any sort of camera control, it's invert or I can't really play.

My reasons come from playing FPS games on the PC back in the day. I move the mouse forward and I look down. I move the mouse back and I look up.

The analog stick on a controller, feels the same way. I move the stick forward (up) and it looks down. I move the stick back (down) and I look up. It just feels natural

FPS always used to be inverted Y by default back in the day.  Somewhere along the line, I'm not sure when, they started makign no inversion the default and those who wanted it inverted like before would have to actively set that option.

Inverting the X-axis though, I'm not sure where that came from.  That was a major annoyance of FF12, and currnetly bugging  me in Wind Waker.

Also on the theme of customizing controls, I wish more games would give you complete contorl over customization.  The trend of customization meaning a choice of 6 pprelaid configurations doesn't do it for me (liek Killzone 2 and Wolfenstein).  I like assigning every button myself.

I remember when I used to play FPS on my pc it was like that but it never stuck with me.  It just seems natural when you look and move in the direction you point your thumb.

I guess it's supposed to be a more immersive experience inverted (although obviously it varies from person to person as our preferences tell), as you tilt your head back to look up, and tilt your head forward to look down.
