My wife and I have been looking into a GPS unit, but have never truly searched as we haven't had the cash. We got an early Christmas present of $500, and we're thinking of each getting something personal ($100 for the three of us...hello Xbox hard drive!), then using the $200 other on a GPS.
We were originally thinking of a Garmin, and had found some we liked, but read online reviews, and they were panned critically! So I thought I'd ask if any Goozers out there have recommendations. Like I said, $200 is a good price for us, we probably wouldn't go insanely high, but with our $500 gift, we could go a little higher...just will cut out on our other planned "presents".
Does anyone have one/have any recommendations?
I got a Garmin Nuvi 255W very recently for $150. This one has a wider screen (4.3-inch diagonal) and text-to-speech (it calls out streetnames). I am very happy with it.
I was actually eying the Nuvi 265WT which was $200 3 weeks ago. It has bluetooth connectivity (to your phone) and real-time weather and traffic (which has an FM antenna(?) that needs to be mounted somewhere in your car).
I opted for the 255W since it came bundled with a friction mount (a non-permanent mount for the dashboard, which I really love), and decided I really did not need bluetooth or weather and traffic.
i have never been a fan of having a separate gps device in my car. I just use the one on my iphone which works best for me and is more convenient.
I however did own at one time before my iphone a Garmin Nuvi with AAA support and it was JUNK. Never worked properly so if i give any advice it would be stay away from Garmin.

We seem to regularly (even outside of here) get "I LOVE GARMIN" and "NEVER GET GARMIN". seems nobody's just "ok" with it.
Any other brands recommended? And I've heard some have subscription fees, which we do NOT want.
regular subscription fees are usually only for live traffic updates. virtually all GPS companies will make you pay for updated maps if you want them ($79 once a year)
