With all the complaints about release night problems for adding items to your queue I thought I would create a poll.  Please try to be civil.

Which of the following methods would you want for adding new releases to your queue.

  • I like it the way it is where it is first come first serve (34.9%)
  • I think a random draw would be best where the day before you request the game and are put into a random draw the next day for your position in the queue (21.2%)
  • I would like it if the release time was a couple of hours earlier so I could stay up to request games (21.9%)
  • I want it so that it moves my games from my watch list directly to my queue using first come first serve so whoever adds it to their watch list first gets the higher spot in line (8.9%)
  • I want it so that it moves my games from my watch list directly to my queue using a random draw to figure out who gets what spot in line (11%)
  • Other - please explain (2.1%)
  • Total Votes: 146

I voted other.  I like the idea of the watch-list-to-queue method, but I think you should be limited to 1 game in your watch list at a time that can be moved over systematically per month or somthing... and I think the order should be based on the order of who added it to their watch list... or maybe base it on feedback score?

I like the idea of randomly assigning every one a queue position who has it in their watch list.

It seems like the best way of stopping the site from crashing when a new release somes out.

As a West coaster I don't have a problem with the current system, but on the other hand I don't think it's fair to the East coasters.

I'm just spitballing here, so if my idea is rubbish, I won't bitch and complain and go on and on, I'll just accept that it's rubbish.

Idea: What about some sort of combination of Random draw with a trading feedback bonus or tier system.

Example. The day before everyone puts their name into the hat for "Super Awesome Game". By the time Midnight Central rolls around there are 150 in the drawing. so in 10% increments people are sorted by similar feedback scores. lets say spots 1-15 are reserved for people with a feedback score of +2000. and those 15 people are drawn at random, then on to the next tier. Spots 16-30 for people with a feedback score 1995-whatever and so on. if the first tier doesn't fill, you can either combine with the next tier, or just randomize whoever did make it into the first tier. then after midnight if you request you're first come first served.

the numbers aren't as important as the idea. I thought this would be a good jumping off point since the G-Team seem like the type that is good with formulas and numbers and stuff. I mean look at the point price system/matrix and all the mystery surrounding that...

And to all you naysayers out there I have 2 words for you...

I say move the time back I fell asleep last week haha

I wouldnt be opposed to try a weekly contest (they should be all inclusive-webgames, pick a number between 1 and 25000, etc) and the winner gets to choose first place for what game he/she wants that given week. That might be fun and give some of the folks who get long wait status because of slow computers a chance to get a nice spot plus it might also bring some new users into the forums if there is a contest for first place involved. Just an idea

I like the random draw, I never "stay up late to add to requests" but I don't think its feasible.

It's a big problem for goozex users IMO, if you don't get on the top 10, you simply won't see the game for 5+ months and it will drive users away.

I'm a fan of the drawing as well.  No one deserves to be #1 more than the next guy, so random I think is best, as it wouldn't cater to any particular time zone, age range (kids with no responsibilities yet), job schedules...etc etc.

Then again you'd still have people whining that they never get in the top 10 WITH the lottery, so IDK.

Personally, there's yet to be a game I HAD to be in the the top 10 for.  The only time I stayed up for Goozex was on accident...just happened to be awake and passing the PC, and I got in the top 10 for both Godfather II and Riddick.  I still haven't requested either, and they've dropped 500 points each.  If I want the game bad, I don't use Goozex.

[crawls out of the Pit o' Death from the beginning of the thread]

As much as I enjoy and have benefited from "first come, first served", it would be cool to see something that would get everyone invovled.  A few of the suggestions earlier in the thread have merit; either a contest or lottery...something on occasion for bigger release weeks to give out a few top spots in the request queue.

That said, there is no perfect system and no matter what, there will be people who are displeased regardless of the system in place.

Lottery FTW!

A lottery is the best approach. The current system = crapshoot + server slowdown. Lottery = crapshoot - server slowdown.

I'd like to add that I liked the idea of auto adding a game from your Watch list to the request list automagically for a lottery drawing.  The right to do so should be limited to a title or two every so often though.

I voted for earlier time, but would like to keep it the way it is too.

The lottery system sounds like a fair idea, but I guarantee after a few Tuesday's roll by if some user's are not top in the 10 or the top 20 via random placement there will be a lot of complaining about how the lottery is unfair.

It's complicated, but it would be nice if there could be an algorithm created to evaluate your prior weeks queue placement and take into consideration the # of requests for the item you are looking to get in the queue for.

Just for a little example:

Say this past Tuesday there were 300 requests for Borderlands and I ended up 250.

Next Tuesday there are 300 requests for Forza 3.  The system could then evaluate where my placement(s) were last week and possibly allow me a higher queue position this week.

It's a lot of number crunching for sure, but it could be more fair than just a complete randomization each week.
