Hexpane:
Borderlands is a FPS, it's almost nothing like FO3.  personally I love FO3 and RPGs are my fav genre, I think FO3 is a much better game, I was a fan of VATS as it was one of the few things carried over from FO1 and FO2.
I agree that FO3 was better, although I think Borderlands was a better made game. The shooting was much more solid that FO3's spotty... everything which were way too bug ridden for their own good. And BL didn't have much of a storyline but it beats out FO3's which was terrible. But FO3 wins for its exploration.

Anyway, I've played this game enough to not feel bad about playing it, and I have to say 1. the AI is pretty terrible 2. there were supposedly 250,000 weapons, but it's appalling that they can tout such a feature when there's really more like less than 10 plus thousands of recolors 3. the textures are really low resolution for some reason which really bothered me. And on a less petty level, the whole rewards system is a little broken... if you reward the player too often, those rewards start to feel more and more meaningless. And yes, it is quite repetitive, and I knew it would be getting into it, but I never thought it would be 99.8% filler.

Those complaints aside, I am still enjoying it, and so far it's my new 2nd favorite for game of the year.

They may be the most scathing review I've ever read that ends in "...my new 2nd favorite for game of the year."

If the game feels like 99.8% filler, why do you continue playing?

(caveat: I haven't played it yet)

I don't have a problem with the concept of VATS - the problem is that the way they implemented it it made combat entirely too easy.   There was almost nothing that could kill you once you got to a certain level because you just make your perfect headshot a few times, hide behind a rock for a second while your VATS points recharge, and then do it again.     Ammo was never even a remote concern, because all you needed was a couple of perfectly fired rounds from VATS to take down anything.    The idea of making shooting turn based isn't bad, but maybe they could have made you actually miss a few more times and give the enemies an actual chance to fire back and do real damage between your turns.

I liked it a lot at first, but once your VATS abilities get so overpowered combat almost seems like it's just a nuisance that gets in your way of enjoying the game.   "Oh gee, here's some more crap that I have to mercilessly destroy and get no challenge from whatsoever".   The combat system in this is far more enjoyable IMO, because it's an actual challenge.    I'm an RPG fan by nature as well, and I have no desire to get the expansions with how terrible the last portion of the main game ended up feeling to me.

Valid complaint, that was fixed w/ difficulty slider, and later w/ the better fix  Broken STeel DLC.

The new enemies in BS are uber buffed, VATS is way more balanced.  But yes, Vanilla FO3, Vats was unbalanced.. but they did fix it...

BTW I am enjoying Boderlands a lot, just not GOTY candidate for me like it is for so many others... I love the style, I love how it has RPG elements, I love that they have vehicles etc...happy to have this game...

But IMO it's not up to the same level as a Bioshock, FO3, Demon's Souls ... but I would never say Boderlands is bad by any stretch.  I dig it.

Those were my complaints, but I chickened out and didnt list them

My other common FPS is complaint is the way enemies react.  One of the coolest shooting features about FO3 was specific body parts react to damage.  Shoot the arm, they drop the gun...Shoot the leg, they limp, shoot the head, they

Boderlands doesn't seem to have that.  Although they do react to being on fire or electrocuted and then dont.  OMG I'm on fire ow ow ow..then fire goes out and they are still moving around full speed no bubbles no troubles  Shoot someone in the head, no shield and they shrug it off until health bar is zero...

Once you play a game where enemies actually react to specific body part damage, it's hard not to notice games that lack the feature.  Minor complaint, just something I can't help but notice

I'm pretty sure mrkekeru pays some lady in high heels to come to his house once a week and step on his balls.

Just wanted to give you an idea of where he's coming from.

That does sound tempting really, but I'm just a glass-half-empty kind of guy. It's easier for me to find things to complain about in games I like than it is for me to describe exactly why I like them. Now if you'll excuse me I've been a bad little boy and it's time for my punishment.

I just finished all of the missions, now it is time to go and grab the rest of the achievements.

Just finished the game with the guys at about LVL 36. We're still missing a few achievements like racing around the speedway, the other class achievements, and the 40&50 levels. We started some of the 2nd playthrough before calling it a night but I'm hoping to get much cooler weapons soon :)

The one thing that's been bothering me is the claptrap above the weapons/ammo shack in the first town. Does anyone know if it has a purpose, or is it really just an Easter Egg? I tried as hard as I could, but I couldn't get close to it.

It is an Easter egg according to Gearbox.

I was a fan of VATS as it was one of the few things carried over from FO1 and FO2.

Huh?  Did I miss the part where the *real* Fallout games were mediocre FPS-based with gimped pseudo-turn-based overlay?

Wink

Hexpane:

lots of goozex users tend to hate FO3 and hate on Bioshock and UNcharted 2 for some reason.

My position on BioShock is pretty well known (love it) and, although I do enjoy FPS, RPG is still my favorite genre. Borderlands is sounding like a game I should definitely pick up.

I personally LOVE Borderlands - it isn't up to STALKER in terms of atmosphere and RPG elements, but it is smooth and clean (i.e. not a bug-ridden mess), and it is just a BLAST.

It is about knowing what you are - Borderlands knows it isn't a hardcore RPG - it is a FPS with lite RPG elements.  That is what it promises, and that is what it delivers.

Just wait. In a year or two we'll also be hearing, "I really liked the FPS elements of X-Com on the 360. It carried over nicely from the PC versions. Those new strategy parts they added need to go, though!"

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
