Hey, first of all I never mentioned anything about the outfit. I think it's funny. What hit me guys was your reactions how you're better than them. etc You keep pointing out that they are illegal aliens...well they are just like you and me.  As to Mexico. Its not all about Mexicans you know. But people from all around the world. I honestly feel stupid and somewhat weird talking political views over internet, and i regret mentioning anything at all. Either way, I am living evidence to myself at least. I know where I came from and I know what I had to do to make everything better.  I might not prove it to you but it will always live with me. As its something you can't really prove because you rely on media to get your information...Technically neither of us can prove anything. Ahh anyways Let's all cheer up and talk more about gaming than political views Wink

There's still Freedom of Speech, but now it's Feedom of Speech*

I could go into detail as to what that asterisk stands for, but it's probably best I don't.

I seriously don't get how illegal immigrants would be offended by that. If I was one (which I'm not [though my parents were at one point]) I would totally get that costume and wear it around. I don't know about the green card though, I think it's a bit too much (then again, I didn't have the chance to see it, so it might be funny too).

It still does offend me that people seem to specifically point to Mexicans when illegal immigrants are mentioned. Now that is offensive, since nearly anyone who doesn't come here with a visa, or stays longer than their visa permits, is an illegal immigrant. Heck, even those damn Canadians can be illegal immigrants.Stick out tongue

We would have to be on some pretty heavy drugs to want to be illegal immigrants.  Not the pharmaceutical kind since those are so expensive in the US Surprise

Does fame count as a heavy drug? Cause that seems to be a big reason for some of those Canadians.Star

  1. This has nothing to do with the 1st Amendment. The government didn't pull the costume. This has to do with public relations and sensitivity, strictly within the company. Very irritating when people complain about violations of free speech when there was none.
  2. Not everything is protected under "free speech," as evidenced by the classic precedent-setting case where the judge said "the most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man falsely shouting fire in a theater and causing a panic." Clearly not everything should be allowed under free speech. (I'm not implying that this particular instance shouldn't have been allowed at all.)

Okay, maybe I should have phrased differently. People (Including Companies) can't quite say what they want because of how horrible the PC crap has gotten. People are way to sensitive to things that aren't even remotely racist, like this costume. People need to do somthing better with their time than complain about their feelings getting hurt over somthing as stupid as a holloween costume.

(*Update: 10/17/09 - It appears that Target and Toys R Us have pulled the costume from their websites sometime last night.)

An offensive "illegal alien" costume is being sold at Toys R Us and Amazon.com as well as other stores.

According to these websites, for just $39.99, you can now dress up as an "illegal alien" for Halloween. These stores are selling the costume made up of an orange jumpsuit with the words "illegal alien" written across the chest. The costume even comes with a mask of a space invader with big eyes, and a green card.

The extra terrestrial creature perpetuates racism and discrimination in an already hostile environment and during a period of time when the debate on immigration reform is increasingly hateful and divisive.

You had time to update the thread but not time to respond to people?  I cant stand when companies give in to stuff like this.  This is no different than PITA, trying to stir up shit when there is nothing wrong.  People who think this is racist need to look in the mirror because not only Mexicans can be illegal immigrants.  Target and Toys R Us loose a little bit of my respect by pulling these costumes.

Agreed.

I think a good degree of PC is healthy and shouldn't be discounted as much as it is, but many times it gets out of hand.

I think you mean PETA - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. PITA is a type of yummy bread, which I'm pretty sure doesn't stir shit up.
