Anybody who doesn't find Dead Space creepy must have ice water in their veins. Scares the bejeezus out of me, particularly in the beginning. But my pulse rate still soars when I suddenly get attacked. I usually play alone late at night, but still...

Good to see Eternal Darkness mentioned alot on here. I always thought it was one of those games that very few people played, but those who did loved it. It probably was, which is why we'll never see a sequel. Great game though, one of the best storylines I've ever played in a game.

I remember being creeped out by a couple levels in the original Thief. The levels where you had to scour through ancient catacombs or dilapidated towns filled with various kinds of undead. Some of the noises they made were pretty freaky.

I also remember being a bit scared playing a game called Haunted House on my Atari 2600 when I was like 6 years old. I'm sure if I played it again now it wouldn't be even remotedly scary with its blocky simplistic graphics, but hey, I was 6. The first person viewpoint made it scary, and the fact I never knew where the hell I was going.

Wow, I'm an idiot.  I have a Wii, but I never use it.  My wife mostly uses it.  I just realized that you can play all GC games on it, so I definitely have to check this Eternal Darkness game out.

Also check out the remake of Resident Evil, another fairly creepy game. A very well done remake, even though I had never played the original.  I could list a bunch more great GC games you should play, but I'll leave it in the scary theme for now.

Eternal Darkness is the best of the best... but in the "creepy as hell" category... Shadow Man 64 would be my vote Anyone played it?...

Ahh forgot that one. Shadow Man is another great game that probably few people played. Creepiest part is that level, I think it was called "Playpen" or something similar, where you heard babies laughing / crying throughout the whole thing. Also happened to be my favorite part of the game, just cuz it was so well done.

Now that I think about it, I played Shadow Man (for the second time) and Eternal Darkness back to back, cuz I remember my roommate asking me if I secretly had a Satan shrine in bedroom closet since I played two such dark games one after another. "You could at least play a Mario game or something in between," he said.

My creepiest played game was Ar tonelico II. The constant sexism, shallow pedantic nature, and disturbing notes of pedophilia just made me stop shortly into it. I think I just grew up in the interim between the two games, and over-the-top 2D console RPG battles was not enough to make me stay. Damn it Japan, knock off the virtual statutory rape.

I was just playing Batman Arkham Asylum, and the first level where you encounter the Scarecrow had me creeped out, and even made me jump at one point. *will describe at the end since it's a spoiler*

Resident Evil 5 creeped me out with it's zombies. I'm sure the previous iterations are way more creepy/scary, but this was the first one I ever played in the series, so it had me cringing and jumping at times. Worse for me was the dogs whose head was split in half with fangs lining it, and those bug looking things; though it was really more when they killed me (and how it looked) than their actual appearance.

Bioshock also gave me the creeps when splicers would come out of nowhere and start attacking you. That, and many of the crazy bosses which seemed pretty intent on trying to kill you (like the doctor). A few of the taped messages also creeped me out, like the one about someone getting plastic surgery and the surgeon going crazy. The fights with the Big Daddys always had me on edge, even towards the end of the game. Also, when you harvested a Little Sister, what was left of them was really disgusting (which made me stop wanting to harvest them after I did it the first time).

Two other games were probably The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (my favorite) and Ocarina of Time. When I was playing through Majora's Mask, I had a Walkthrough guide with me so I knew what would happen ahead of time, but in general that game was very dark and creepy. The creepiest stuff though clearly had to be when you lost at something important (ex. protecting the ranch from aliens), since it seemed really personal and made you feel depressed you let someone down. Probably what freaked me out the most though was the typical stuff that was found it both: ReDeads, Wallmasters, Floormasters, Like Likes, and Peahats.

*SPOILER ALERT* In the first level that involves the Scarecrow, the music really started to put me on edge. I actually got stuck in the morgue when all of the stuff is moving around by itself, which had me panicking since I didn't know what to do (until I payed attention to what was being said, which said to get out). Then when I got to the next morgue, I saw the body bags, opened the first one, saw it was his father, knew the next one was the mother. After I opened the mother's body bag, I saw the third one (which I actually hadn't remembered seeing) then thought to myself "This is probably going to be Bruce himself talking back at him, since he's metaphorically killed his own soul". Then when I opened the bag, to my utter surprise, the Scarecrow pops out with this menacing looked. I freaked the hell out right when it happened, not even realizing it was supposed to be the Scarecrow (until I advanced and realized it).

Eternal Darkness, AND Shadow Man back to back !!  Most people wouldn't be able to handle that.

It is cool you said you were playing it the second time around, cause beating the game always fired me up for another session...

The Condemned series and Dead Space.

But, the first time a game ever scared me was in 2000 the Legend of Zelda: The Majora's Mask. I was playing and I fell down off the platforms in that opening area of the forest temple, and was swarmed by those black fuzzy-shadow things with the glowing eyes. I heard the shuffling noise they make when they move, but I couldn't see anything. Then they jumped me. I freaked out, screamed, dropped the controller, and was about to run out the door. I managed to gird my fourteen year old loins after a few seconds and dispatch the critters.

Dead Space is not that scary but it does have some nerve wrecking spots as long as you have some decent sound at a decent volume.

FEAR and Dead Space made the hair stand up on the back of my neck a few times.
