Looking only for wiiware games to spend the points on.

Looking to get some impressions on some games. I already have Nyxquest and World of goo. What other games are you guys enjoying?

I researched and looked at some reviews and am interested in Contra, Monkey Island Chapter 1, Toki Tori, Mr.Driller, Lost Winds, Mega Man 9, and Swords and Soldiers.

Any impressions on these games, and anything else that you would recommend? Would appreciate some opinions on some of these games and the games I might not of listed that you enjoy.

Personally, I'd end up blowing it on straight-up NES games. :)

If you like that kind of stuff, Tetris and Dr. Mario WiiWare are fun.

Mega Man 9 probably got the most playtime out of any WiiWare game on my console.

Tetris Party is great, but it's rather overpriced for what you get.  Swords & Soldiers is quirky and fun.

Mario RPG was a must have for me

I've not been on my Wii for a while, but I had some extra Game Crazy store credit to burn, so I got a Wii Points card. Plan on burning it on World of Goo, or maybe some Metroid and Castlevania games, depending on what they have out now.

Monkey Island Chapter 1  --  The story and adventure are very good, but the game engine isn't smooth on Wii and you'll need to buy each espisode (total: 6000 points?) to finish the story.  I'd recommend getting Monkey Island on PC instead if you can.  For Wii, I'd recommend getting the Sam & Max Season 1 disc instead if you haven't already played it, because it offers 6 complete episodes for under $15 (at least here in Canada).  Barring both of those options, this is still a good choice for WiiWare... just maybe not the best choice.

Toki Tori  --  This is a very well made game.  It gets very difficult, but rarely frustrating.  The production values and design are great, even though it has been overlooked by many people.  However, despite technical excellence and a great sense of character, Toki Tori never seemed as enjoyable to me as some other games.  Maybe there was more trial and error than I enjoy?  Maybe it just depends on how much you love action-puzzle games?

Lost Winds  --  The gameplay is peaceful and relaxed.  You can't run quickly, don't find many enemies to challenge you, and the game isn't very long.  That said, the controls are perfect for Wii and I enjoyed every minute while playing because of the great music and art design.  I think this game is overpriced at 1000 points, but do still recommend it for people who enjoy exploration and simple adventures (especially with the sequel out in Europe today).  Not for everyone and if you already have NyxQuest then maybe skip this one?

Mega Man 9  --  If you like old-school challenge and games from the NES era, this is a must buy.  My personal favorite game on WiiWare, and one of the best Mega Man games created.  There are lots of neat little tricks to discover, the usual difficult levels and cheap deaths, and actually a decent (for this series) storyline.  You can pick up extra DLC content for this title, but I'd suggest ignoring that until you finish the main game.  Highly recommended for old-school action fans!

Swords and Soldiers  --  This game surprised me because of how much fun and how well made it is.  Reminds me of tower defense games in reverse, where you send the steady stream of baddies to reach a goal and tear it down.  Includes a hefty campaign, a handful of fun challenge modes, achievements to unlock, and great multiplayer action if you have someone else willing to sit down and play.  Highly recommended.

What other games are you guys enjoying?

Bit.Trip Beat (and Core)  --  Great for retro gamers, or people who like sensory overload in their games.  The graphics are so simple, but once you start to do well get flashier and more hypnotic.  Music is a huge part of the game, and very good to listen to.  Gameplay is tight and difficult, requiring lots of practice before you can reach the later levels.  (Suggestion: If you want to move ahead but find the game too difficulty, get a friend to play at the same time... makes this game MUCH easier!)  Best of all, the price is perfect for these bite-sized, arcade-like experiences.  I definitely prefer Beat because the you spin the Wii remote like an analog dial to move instead of just timing button presses.  Very cool and worth buying!

Onslaught  --  If you have a non-Wii console, then don't even look at this.  Otherwise, it's neat to see a downloadable FPS title for Wii that includes online co-op for only 1000 points.  There isn't a ton of diversity in levels, the graphics are rough, and movement is slower than it should be.  So not the best choice, but worth checking out for Wii owners who want an inexpensive shooter to plow through.  I've enjoyed the game and thought it was worth buying, your mileage might vary.

Art Style: Cubello  --  Another game with simple aethetics, but enjoyable gameplay.  Controls are tight and responsive, there is enough replay value to come back for more, and it's fun to rack up big combos.  That said, there is a lot of luck to this "puzzle" game and it's really best as a short pick-up and play experience.  Only costing 600 points makes it worth playing.  (The other Art Style games are also very good, and Orbient in particular seems popular.  But this is the one I come back to play most often.)

Magnetica Twist  --  Not much to the gameplay, surely you've seen it before... but the game is still addictive and fun.  Got played a ton at our house because my wife likes this game, and we went through all the options: challenge levels, multiplayer modes, endurance/high score competition.  Some reviewers didn't like the controls and docked the game heavily because of it, but we never had any issues or complaints.

Tetris Party  --  If you like Tetris, then this is a no-brainer.  The cooperative mode is awesome, and playing online is fun.  Some of the other new modes are just gimmicks, but still worth trying and playing a little bit.  My only real complaints about this game involve changes that The Tetris Company make to all new versions of Tetris, so all versions have the same "issues".  Not worth getting into that here though!  Recommended for fans of the series.

Bubble Bobble Plus  --  I actually play the NES version, but this one is superior.  Tremendous 2-player game, not as great for solitaire play.  An arcade classic that I will always enjoy.  Smile

There are also some multiplayer-only games that I like, but it's hard to recommend them unless you regularly have other people interested in playing:  Driift Mania, Hey! That's My Fish!, Jungle Speed, Defend Your Castle

My recommendations would probably be:  Mega Man 9, Swords & Soldiers, and Bit.Trip Beat.  The remaining 500 points could be used to buy a NES Virtual Console game, Defend Your Castle, Bit.Trip Core (if you like the first one), or saved for future purchases.

(By the way: if you are considering Virtual Console games as well as WiiWare, there are many more choices worth looking at.  The initial request was pretty specific about WiiWare though, so I won't list any here.  This website rates VC games, and gives a reasonable overview of what you might consider:  http://tinyurl.com/y8rk6ku)

Wow ejamer.  Thanks so much for such a well thought out and informative post.  I appreciate that. Smile Thanks for the responses from everyone else as well with their suggestions.

Is Swords and Soldiers a easy game to get into if your not so familiar with the genre?  I enjoyed the beta of Fat princess, is it fun and simple like that game,or difficult?  Is there a strong single player component or is mostly for multi - player?

I should of probably mentioned local multi player rarely happens in my home.

On a side note, are wiiware games ever traded on here? Is it worth my time adding them to my list,or no?

If you are open to a Virtual Console game, I reccommend Secret of Mana.  It is one of my all time favorite games.
