If you had a job that you might not be at in 6 years or less and you had the chance to make the most of it financially, wouldn't you?

Yes I would.  I wouldn't mask it by saying "I'm doing it for the love of the game" though.  Pay me.

I appreciate those professional athletes that are at least honest.

Why can't it be both?  =P

We got the human lie detecor here :)  Am I missing something that its a proven fact he is "masking" why he is still playing?...is there a list of who's honest and who isn't among pro athletes somewhere that I'm missing?

Thats your opinion, I'm fine with that.  I'm just trying to show otherwise why I disagree with those type of statements that I hear a lot from people.  It just doesn't add up to me, it still sounds like some personal beef, lol.

Or maybe I'm just thinking way out of reality here.  Possible, since I did play football for our local semi-pro/minor league football team (or whatever you want to call it) where I played...for free for three years, lol!  Some people really do love to just play, something about the competitive juices and proving something, I dunno.  I'd argue the people that just want the money don't last more than a few years in any sport :P

Even there, at the 'semi-pro' level, money is still a potential incentive.  The possibility to be seen by a passing scout and brought up is always possible, and may motivate some to play harder as a result; with money coming down the road.

Can we really expect a Wisconsin resident to be impartial in a discussion involving Brett Favre? Wink Pizza

Call me a skeptic, but I have a difficult time believe any professional athlete plays their respective sport solely for the love of the game.  I will make one exception.  Chris Chelios.  That guy will never retire.

In other news, Crabtree just ended his holdout because he was given 32 million reasons to love the game.

lol, I'm born and raised in Minnesota though!  I used to dread when the Vikes played against the Packers because I knew he would tear us apart.

I'm not dismissing money as being a non factor in athletes decisions, obviously money is a factor in any job someone takes, but ya gotta have something else in there too, otherwise the money wont come in the first place.  We'll see how Crabtree does, I hope he just had some bad advice in his ear up until now.  I'm glad the Niners didnt really budge on their offer either though.

If I recall, when he played for the Packers, Brett Favre, on at least one occasion, accepted a pay cut so they could afford some other players he wanted on the team. Not a lot of players would do that.

I see a lot of players in baseball that play because they love to play. They're the ones that don't let haggling over their contract and paychecks hinder them in signing into a team they love to play for. It's not too hard to imagine that the same type of people exist in other sports like football.

From what I've read/heard he was upset Hayward-Bay (possible bust?) got his (Crabtree's) money.  As a Raiders fan I have to agree with him (Crabtree).  I don't know wtf Davis was thinking passing on Crabtree.  So what if he didn't register a 40 time in the combine because of his foot.  HB has two catches.  Two, that's one more career reception than Brett Favre Angry

With the way guaranteed contracts work in the NFL, Crabtree couldn't afford to miss this year.  If he did sit out this year he wouldn't get his guaranteed money due to the lockout or strike that the NFLPA is telling it's players to prepare for.  I'm not sure how this possible work stoppage will impact the NFL's popularity, but it didn't help MLB or the NHL.  I'd like to see more sports mirror the NHL (odd I know) and place a cap on rookie salaries.  You have a great first three seasons, establish yourself, you get paid.  You could even call it the Ryan Leaf rule Wink

Touché.  Perhaps his selfishness with the Jets (and living with a Jets fan) has soured my impression of Favre a little.

Though not a player, Sean Payton gave back some of his salary to the Saints so they could go after a key free agent in the off-season.  I don't recall the player's name though.

Totally agree on the rookie salary cap point.  Way out of hand in my opinion.  I'd love to see that implemented!
