Purple shield is awesome because it greatly lowers damage taken by fire. I don't use it at all anymore, though, even though I got mine to a dark +4, and will get it to +5. It's too big, and heavy, for me anymore, and with a flame resistance ring on, I can take a couple shots from the blue dragon without healing.
I found the purple flame shield to be a most critical piece of my inventory my first time through the game, though.
I put on one of those flame resist rings and still got owned by some fire by a mage in 2-2. Does that fire count? I was surprised that not only did it not seem to negate some of the damage...it looked like I took more...lol.

I don't rightly know, anymore. I'm using a Dark Silver shield +4 right now, which is strong against spells, so it helps me against spellcaster's flames, as well as their other attacks. It's also light enough that I can parry/riposte with it. I don't even wear my fire resist ring unless I'm running through dragon fire.

w/ upgraded PFS, you can block the mage fire balls dead on and take almost no damage... you will also need PFS for a boss if you plan on melee
Kenny007: I backtracked from 1-2 to the dragon area and grabbed everything. It was odd that the dragons weren't even there, and I don't remember killing them. I still need a few STR for that shield, and I didn't immediately see why it was so awesome, so I'll just take the forum's word for it. Tried to beat the 2-2 boss; took about 25% HP off before I got cornered and beat to death....poor, lost, 16k souls...

If the dragon is gone and you did not kill it, it's because your WT is prolly PW. Killing the dragon is optional, but you get a trofee
The PFS doesn't seem awesome at first, but it will be once you upgrade it. Best game 1 melee and flame resist shield, again you need it if you go melee. If you don't melee, you wont need it. I went straight PFS I didn't switch to DARK because I knew Dark Silver would eventually come
Like many others, i mostly use upgraded dark silver shield now as I've beaten the fire areas and it's lighter/smaller. But I switch to PFS whenever I know I'm going to fight a heavy melee like a BP named or something.
Basically like everything in demon's souls, you have options, and go with what works best. PFS IMO is the best for turtling, the Dark Silver is the best all around/any level shield and of course Adjudicator for the poison world.
Mechazawa005: Atheist:Two matches in a row I invaded with 20% hp/Clever Rat/Morion/Second Chance Enlighten me if you will: I'm a little noobish when it comes to invading. Only invaded once and have been invaded several times. I understand the entire combo with the exception of invading with 20% health. I thought when you re-zone when invading you reset to your max health as a phantom...maybe i'm wrong there. Can you bring yourself down to ~20% health before invading and have that carry over?

Hitless can be used to bring your health down, common boss strategy.

I have a hard time tell what's in what WT color. IDK if its PW or just neutral. I thought in 1-1, under pure white conditions, that gate on the left is open (at the very beginning of the level). It wasn't for me (last I checked).
Kill the dag-ron for a trophee?! I'm doing that two nite!

Hmm IDK, PWWT both dragons will not be there, I didn't see the specifics on the wiki, but there is no red dragon even on the bridge area in 1 worlds for you?
Your health and mana carry over when you invade, but when you get back to your game, it resets to full again.
I started playing this game yesterday and i have to say i am absolutely addicted. I didn't even play MW2 yesterday because I was playing DS. Quick question though, are the souls i collect only to be used as money? I'm on the tower knight and of course i died, but i could never figure out anything to do with my souls besides buy items and upgrade weapons. Am i missing something?

As far as I know (also a noob at the title), I haven't seen anything else to use them on, EXCEPT (just noticed this as I reskimmed your text) to level your character...it's probably their chief use. Whenever I have enough for a new level, I often run back to the Nexus just because I can't stand losing 15k at a time (laughable to some of the DS vets on this thread I'm sure).
As far as that Tower Knight...I killed him using a BS method after trying a few times to beat him face-to-toe. I plowed past him as fast as could be, killed all the archers on either side, and plinked away at him with a bow I found in 4-1. Slow but steady, the big bastard fell and I moved on.
What do you mean level up?!!!! Can you bank your souls???! I lost 10k souls yesterday.... :(
EDIT: how do you level up, and if possible how do you bank souls?

Once you beat 1-1 (which you must have to have faced the Tower Guard), there's a Maiden in Black that roams the Nexus. She can generally be found nearby the last level you exited, otherwise, she's down by the blacksmith or across the stairwell generally. Speaking with her allows you to raise your stats at 1 point per level, each level getting more expensive than the last. Your first levels will only cost a few 100, though they ramp up quick. I'm only in the low 30s and it's about 7-8k per point for me now...others here are already in the 100s, and I don't care to hear how much THEIR levels cost...lol.
Unfortunately, there's no way to bank the souls, and I've lost countless number of them in levels myself. It's why I generally run to the Nexus when I've gathered a good number of them, so I can spend them on SOME form of advancement, rather than continually pull my hair out at one spot in a given level. I always have a hard time stepping into the Boss zone, knowing full well the 10-20k souls I have might not be coming home with me...
Oh wow, so i was essentially trying to take the tower night as a level 1....awesome. I am gonna whoop some ass now.
Well, depending on your class, you start at level 4-9, but yes, essentially, that's what you were doing. You can't bank souls, although you can bank the soldier's and hero's souls you find, and then use them to add to your souls when you're about to do some leveling.
To answer Kenny's curiosity, even though he said he doesn't want to know, I pay about 100k per soul level.
Maskim:I pay about 100k per soul level.
Holy balls.

I'm assuming that later in the game (maybe not even until you've started a New Game +) that soul accumulation speeds up? At my rate, it'd take between 3 and 5 flawless level clears to hit 100k souls...and that's just too much to ask within DS.
