Just a quick update...I still suck.

Played a little bit of 4-1 to get some souls, made 10k before I sprinted back to the Nexus.  Leveled a bit then head back to 1-1 to kill that red eyed skele guy that I avoided initially.  After 4 deaths, I decided not to bother.  It wasn't the deaths that bothered me, but the need to play through the whole level again to get to him.  It was becoming clockwork stringing backstab after backstab after backstab together, and I got weary.

A large improvement over my 1-1 skillz yesterday though!  Still, I feel no further in the game =(

Just starting out, the best way to go is to slowly try and clear the items out of most of the x-1 stages, just as you're doing.  Retreating back to the Nexus to level up your character is helpful.  There are also quite a few NPCs you'll encounter along the way that will offer different items/upgrades/spells - some will appear back in the Nexus after being encountered and others are static and will require you to run through a small part of the stage to meet with again.

Red-eyes can be a pain, though ranged and magic can help that out.  They are great for farming souls and getting some quick stats but you may want to consider avoiding them until you can take them out in only a few hits.

Slowly, you'll be improving your weapons, equipment, stats and approach when you'll have the revelation, "I just pwned the s**t out of that stage."

Only then, a Jedi will you be...  Pizza

On my third tour of duty in Boletaria, and I still avoid red eyes.  Red eye knights, red eye skeletons with dual katanas, can't stand them.  It does you no good yet, but once you kill Leechmonger and get the poisoncloud spell, one cast and they'll die from it.  My red eye strategy is as follows:

1. Sneak up close enough to lock on.

2.Cast poison cloud.

3.Fire off one arrow to get them to charge me.

4.Run like a little girl.

5. Come back a bit later, and watch their health slowly drain, from a safe distance, because they charged through my poison cloud trying to kill me.

They really aren't, anymore.  However, I have this ingrained fear in me for them from the early game.

If you start the level where you fight the blue dragon but go backwards at the start you can fight all 3 and then get lots of souls :)

At least i'm not the only one.  Something about a pair of glowing red eyes in the darkness (especially in a game like DS with a very dark ambiance) that's very unnerving IMO.

My gut reaction to seeing them is still "run the f**k away"...

Agree...and I can appreciate your malicious intentions.  Personally, I have to counter-balance that argument with "my character is squishy and will die if Red-Eyes looks at him with enough force."

They don't give enough souls, though.  It's much quicker and safer to pop 3 or 4 arrows into the reaper at the beginning of 4-2, get about 15k souls for one kill, run off the cliff, and repeat.

So, since I'll be taking advantage of Atlus' guide replacement program, anybody interested in a free DS strat guide?  It'll of course be missing the cover and first page, and anything else they decide to require to get a new one with a cover that doesn't fade or wipe off, but it's available to you for  the low cost of an envelope and whatever it costs to ship.

Although your front-cover-missing DS strat guide would fit nicely between by beat-to-hell FFVII and torn-in-half FF Tactics guides, i'll take a pass.

Awesome of you to offer it up, especially since DS is certainly a game that benefits from use of a guide...or a wiki...or a FAQ...or divine intervention.
