Mages are pretty strong, indeed. But you can dodge almost all magic, and block it with your shield as well. Things like rings of fire resistance actually do a lot in this game, so they can save you from a lot of damage. Some bosses it's almost required depending on our build/soul level (2-1 comes to mind.)
Pure mages (Like one I started recently) can kill people with a single fireball in some cases. The problem is, they lack endurance, and thus can get charged and killed pretty easily by a decked out warrior with a huge ass sword. So they aren't really overpowered if you gear yourself correctly, but it's nearly impossible to switch your gear during a pvp battle, so you have to come prepared and hope for the best. Sometimes you'll set yourself up to take out a mage and end up facing a dude with a giant spear and a tower shield. It just happens sometimes, you can always try and run away from him to regear, though.
Atheist: That spell is a bitch, which is why I usually wear a ring of fire resistance as a black phantom, that or the foe ring. I PK'd three people last night with North Regelai/Morion/Clever Rat's with Second Chance on, in a single hit. One of them even had two Blue Phantoms with that I got to kill (I think I got their souls as well.) A good spell to get for killing Black Phatoms is Wrath of God. I've had a few people hide in corners ready to cast it, only for me to stand above them and shoot them with a bow. But if you're good at hiding (Thief and Graverobber Rings) you have a good chance at not being seen before you can ambush them.

ROFL that's why I've been offline until I finally finish game 1. With that set up, I don't have a counter. Especially since I don't go into a level w/ anything more than I need for the PVE. Although I just got Wrath of God last night.
I'll try PVP again once I finally get Rogues clothes and more colorless demon souls. My Dragon Bone is only +1, Abju Shield is only +2, PFS is only +7 etc... Baby nail not upgraded...
I only have the main boss left now, False King yeah? Spent last night farming a few soul levels, then managed to take out the BLue Dragon on a PBWT and went back to finish the Dragon God level, that was annoying until you get the timing right

Decided it was time to recruit some help after he soundly whooped me 3 or 4 times. 2 Blue Phantom tanks and a whole lot of spice later it was over.
Went for the "good" ending and later took care of 1-1 offline on my New Game+ to reach the Nexus with my 200K+ in souls - bumped me up to level 86. The difficulty increase is noticable, but not as bad as I thought it might be.
...and now I can go back to enjoying the game again.

I haven't gotten around to it yet, but I'm going to complete 1-1 so I can use my half a mil in souls before I officially shelf this game, temporarily. My school funding went through, so I'm typing this on my new vaio, while Dragon Age installs.
I know for a fact I'll be coming back to Demon's Souls, and it's a definite keeper for me (sorry anyone who's in line for Deluxe Edition, that's one less copy available for eventual trade), but for the time being, it's time for a Bioware break.

Single player somewhat. Although you'll have to dodge and move alot! MP not at all. Live players will dodge fireballs. Unless you have a massive spell and are a high Magician you won't kill to many people spamming a fireball or soul arrow.
Some of the harder bosses are tough to kill with magic as well. There is one enemy that rolls at you really fast and hitting him with magic is hard as hell. Overall it's pretty balanced as far as magic goes. A bit easier for boss fights but a bit harder for 1v1

Figures I would get invaded the first time I step into online mode on new game+. Fool tried to jack me shortly into 2-1 and ran right into a trap - I was waiting for him to clear the area past the first bridge with the boulders being thrown overhead so I could ambush him at the doorway.

I'm hoping I have the patience for this title. After dying a few times in 1-1, I was rather proud of myself in my progress; being able to wipe out pretty much everything short of the boss, though not actually having reached the boss yet. When I finally did though, I won on my first attempt.
Uplifted by this success, I plowed into 1-2. I was even more pleased to reach the Tower Guard on my first go. Here's roughly how it went:
Kenny: Why hello there! You're awfully tall!
Boss: ...
Kenny: You must get picked first for basketball all the time!
Kenny: Well, I'll just be heading to the other side of the courtyard now...
Boss: *RAGE!* *Falcon Punch!* *Oneshot shield smash O Doom!!!*
Kenny: Damnit...
So, followup attempts were rather rushed, with obvious deaths, but even when I made it back to him again, I was only able to take 5-10% of his health off before owned again. IDK how you guys can run around with 10s of thousands of souls while I fear holding onto more than a few 1000!
I love the difficulty of the game, but at the same time, doing an entire level over....and over.........and over again can increase the likelihood of ulcers I hear.

Tower KNight is one of those bosses that you need to attack the "right way" or get pwned.
As far as doing levels over and over... yeah it can get old on certain levels. PBWT 5-2 pwned me last night. I got bored trying to use the Bow on the BP Giant Gob so I tried to melee him, could not seem to do it, I could get in a few hits but his club swing takes 75% stamina on a block.... so you can't block 2X
I got crushed cause I got greedy, that's the name of the game.
Souls have inflation, depending on the death, 2K seems like a lot early on, but once you hit level 70+ it's like an MMO, 57K+ souls for 1 level...
I will often ignore a soul spot less than 30K if I died somewhere where it takes long to get back, it's faster to get 30K farming 4-2 than doing a corpse run.
Knowing how slow 5-2 is, I actually did not go back and started Dragon Age instead... soooo much easier :) Just press X and watch LOL
Is there a reason to pick up the tons of duplicate swords and shields and such that I found all throughout 1-1? I saw no method to sell them, so I'll presume there isn't one, so I just banked them.
Is there higher end thief armor later in the game?
