Hexpane:You got lucky on old monk (having a PVP player you could beat). If a serious PVP player gets summoned that could halt progress for many.
I'm sure it was in large part to the summoned player being worse at PvP combat than I was. It was only the second time i've had to fight PvP and it turned out much better than the first. Dude was heavily armored, slow and content to "turtle" behind his shield most of the time. My character is a caster primarily, but I was able to upgrade my weapon to Moon Scimitar +5; damage being mostly based off my Magic stat gives me some serious bite in melee combat if I use my speed and employ a hit and run strategy...and avoid dying in 2-3 hits.
I should probably invest a few points into Vitality one of these days....

Just finished my second playthrough. Watching the cinematics now. My character looks a lot cooler with his greatsword on his back. I wish he could have it across his back with his dark silver shield, while holding the uchigatana. That's just look badass.
I'm hesitant to actually start on my third play now. I've got over 500k souls on me that I don't want to lose to some random black phantom. Guess I'll be playing offline until I beat phalanx.

Yeah turtling is kinda useless, another "gimping" of tanks in RPGs... all too common

The third playthrough is only about 8% more difficult than NG+, so it's not too bad. I was going to offer you help as a Blue Phantom to help you with NG+ False King, but apparently you managed yourself.
Yea, it's not nearly as big a jump in difficulty as the 2nd play was. It's black phantoms I'm worried about, though, not the game itself. Once I get past Phalanx and spend my horde of souls, then I'll go back online.
False King was a pain. I looked around for a while for a blue phantom to summon, had no luck, got invaded by a black phantom, and decided to just dash to the False King. When the elevator was closed and going up, the black phantom was charging me, but couldn't get to me. Rather than ride it back down to a fight I was ill prepared for (Dragon and the trio of BPs at the beginning of the level took most of my arrows and spice) I just decided to man up and take the King down.
It took about 20 herbs, and a decent chunk of time (my +4 dragon greatsword swings which usually average about 350+ for regular and 450 for strong were only doing about 115), but he fell.
You always could just die so you're in soul form, then pick up your souls so you wouldn't get invaded. But I suppose it's easier just to sign out of the game. Personally I like the suspense created by having that many souls with a Black Phantom in the game. It really turns up the stakes, and makes my experience a lot more enjoyable. Though that's probably because I rarely lose in PVP.
The easiest way for killing the False King, in my opinion, is using a strong bow + Clever Rat + Morion, and keeping Second Chance on at all times. I usually do a few hundred damage a hit, but that's just me. Everyone has their own strategies in this game, which is why it's fun.
I win more than I lose in pvp. I think overall I'm about 75% win ration, with more wins lately than in the beginning. I just know that when I get smug and have over half a million souls on me is the time I run into someone who just owns me.
My inexperience with MP led to a neat revelation: if you die as a Blue Phantom, you still keep the souls you had collected on the stage. Racked up a few extra souls levels today on assisting on 1-3 to get my body back.
Just had assistance from 2 awesome Blue Phantoms on 5-2 and the Dirty Colossus. Only have 1-4 and 5-3 (plus endgame) to go before I start my New Game+.
My perceived lack of skill prevented me from regularly utilizing MP. I'm glad I took the plunge today...
Wow...that one boss is actually a player is probably one of the coolest things I've ever heard.
Is there a TON of invasion happening in this game? I don't want to hide in offline mode if I can avoid it, but I'd rather not be ganked every 5 minutes while I learn the game, either.

From my experience, your first playthrough you don't deal with too many black phantoms. Your second play, there's a lot of them. They have to be a similar level to you to be able to get into your game, and people's first time through, they're focusing on the game itself, not on the strangling kenny with his entrails.

You'd be surprised how often that happens!
Boy am I pumped to play this game again. The World Series has killed my gaming time this week, and my wife INSISTS that she watches me play this game, so I can't play after the game when she's long in bed! Bah. I should be able to actually START the game tonight though...looking forward to it.
...she's also the reason I haven't beaten Uncharted 2 yet. Wives...

strangling kenny with his entrails.
I have this move mapped to my R3 button.
Man I dealt with a ton I felt like in my first play through. I loved it though I'd hide and then blow them up with that giant pillar of fireball spell!

That spell is a bitch, which is why I usually wear a ring of fire resistance as a black phantom, that or the foe ring. I PK'd three people last night with North Regelai/Morion/Clever Rat's with Second Chance on, in a single hit. One of them even had two Blue Phantoms with that I got to kill (I think I got their souls as well.)
A good spell to get for killing Black Phatoms is Wrath of God. I've had a few people hide in corners ready to cast it, only for me to stand above them and shoot them with a bow. But if you're good at hiding (Thief and Graverobber Rings) you have a good chance at not being seen before you can ambush them.
