It's definitely not story heavy, but there is a story line, and if you watch the movies, and pay attention in the beginning, you get a pretty good sized dose. Where it really succeeds, as mentioned by someone else, is the atmosphere. It's so engrossing, that even though it's one of those 'make your own character's story' games, it works pretty well.
I really like how they did combat, especially the parry/riposte system, although I can't seem to time it correctly on anything bigger than a basic dregling, so far. I've found a good amount of lewtz so far, from weapons, shields, armors, and souls, although I can't use them yet, because my strength isn't quite high enough yet. Although it gives you the option of switching to a two handed style, which ups your strength in regards to using that particular weapon, while it's two handed, but It's not fast enough for me, yet, due to my strength and dex to use the big swords effectively.
I dig it, and although it's a diablo-ish dungeon crawling hack n slash, it reminds me quite a bit of old skool american computer rpgs. Like Eye of the Beholder, where you're a good distance in, and run out of items, and there's no clicking save, or quick escape methods (keep in mind I traditionally play fighters, so mage escape spells do not apply for me). I think 'hard' is the wrong word for this game, and unforgiving is probably more apt.

my head will now explode.
Love the sound of riposte etc... detailed combat, love the idea of deep atmosphere, MMO diablo "make your own story" style
HATE - no save? run out of healing items? Sounds too much like Dragon Quest. Hmmm
Hexpane:Sounds too much like Dragon Quest
If only. I love those games.
Meh I bought a copy and then request some games on goozex to sell on ebay to make up for the price. Apparently I can get 30 bucks almost for MK vs DC Universe and I've had it on my list for ever...Might end up selling my ps2 since I probably will never use it..
Anyways back to the game:
1. I'm using a magician and not exactly happy with the Lack of Magic Regen...Once it's gone I can't get it back!! No loot seems to give me magic!! WTF?!?! So far I'm just harvesting souls going back into nexus or whatever and buying magic regen herbs. 350 for whatever that magic regen herb is...trying to get like 10 of them or so before I go for taking on the whole level.
As for fighting I do enjoy it ALOT. I think the sword fighting is unbelievable in this game. Dodging and blocking is amazing. I got to one part of the level and used magic on this dude with a spear though and it basically did nothing. He killed me in like 1 strike. Bummer.
Anyways the game is pretty engrossing and makes you take your time. You really can't rush this game. i love the Online hints. I love leaving hints. It's really an interesting and amazing game
The urge to buy this game is considerable after reading everyone's experience with it. I loves me a good dungeon-crawling, loot-grabbing, level-grinding multiplayer RPG. The fact that you need to apply yourself and can't blindly mash away on the attack button is a huge plus and the difficulty isn't scaring me off.
I'm 9th in line and REALLY hoping some Goozers decide to part ways with it soon, before I do something rash...

Was it the red eyed knight? You really can't kill him if you just started.. BUT, you can make him chase you and down some stairs. 9/10 times he will fall to his death.
He gives like 2000 souls, which is more than enough to level up your stats early on.
Now I understand why we aren't getting this at work. It's an Atlus game *rolls eyes*

I had pre-ordered it, but after trying it out, decided I preferred games that did not give me Tourettes syndrome.
So I started using a Magician last night and magic does make the combat a little more interesting. Early on you're pretty much just a soldier who can wield magic so your swordplay doesn't suffer at all and you're faster than the typical soldier but your health depletes quicker. With having no way of saving the game I'm not sure what loot and soul count I'll be at when I start it back up again tonight but it has me going back to it so we'll see how far I get before the dungeon crawl get's tiresome.
Sorry Weapon-X but I won't be trading it just yet.
A quick note to folks who haven't tried it yet. Your starting class means very little in the whole scheme of the game. There are no skills or equipment that you are barred from using due to your class. It's all based on your attributes. All it really affects is the beginning of the game, as until you complete the task so that you can level up, you're stuck as your base class.
So, if you want to use magic from the get go, pick priest, magician, or temple knight. If you don't want magic, or can wait to get it, any other class will do.
