G-Nitro:

Attack The Gas Station

This was one of the first Korean films I had seen. Attack the Gas Station is a crazy, over the top comedy about 4 guys who hold up a Gas Station and keep the Manager and employees hostage. Each character has their own background and history which help you connect with them.

No Mark aspired to play baseball but never had the opportunities as others. Mu Dae-Po has issues with authority and while many of his actions were of good nature, he always winds up being punished. He also carries a large stick throughout the movie. Yoo Ji-Tae had been an artist, but was constantly at odds with his father who never approved. Finally, Ddan Dda-Ra was kicked out of a Rock Band due to associating himself with shady characters.

Once the guys have taken over the gas station, they can't seem to find the money. With the manager not telling them about it, they finally decide to run the gas station themselves and keep the money. This leads to various run-ins with other gangs, police and customers. As these interactions occur, more hostages are taken. Each character even has some growth as a person by the end of the film, and you get to see what became of each character during the ending credits.

I highly recommend this movie to all fans of Asian or Korean cinema. This is one of those movies that still stands up 10 years later. Filled with comedy, a bit of action, and some social commentary on Korea in the '90s, you can't go wrong with Attack the Gas Station.

Watched CJ7 tonight, and it was OK.  Very cutesy, but with some serious issues.  Would have preferred a different ending, but understand it.

Are any of his other movies any good (i.e. Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer . . . )?

I've watched a bunch over the last couple weeks:

LIVE ACTION:

Kung Fu Hustle:  didn't care for it, was just OK for me.

Hard Boiled: watched for first time, and thought it was really good.  Can see why John Woo was so famous (although I think a lot of his American releases had way too much slo-mo).  I'd give it 7.5/10

Blood The Last Vampire:  Wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be.  Had a very different plot than the animated, but was a good plot.  Lots of violence (although no blood was ever on Saya, you would think she'd be drenched in blood?).  My biggest complaint, besides some bad acting, was the animation of the monsters.  I haven't seen bad claymation like that since the original Ghostbusters (or a made for Sci-Fi channel movie).  I'd give it a 7/10

ANIME:

Afro Samurai: not much to the plot, just senseless, rise to the top killing.  I know there was a reason for him doing it, but still not a deep plot or anything, and no reason why everyone wanted to kill him.  Didn't care for it.

Spirited Away:  I'm sorry to say, but I don't think I'm a Miyazaki fan.  I've seen 3 films, and thought Princess Mononoke was good, but didn't care for this one or Kiki's Delivery Service.  I just think he's overrated.  Spirited was just way too weird and didn't care for any of the characters.

Millenium Actress:  Loved it.  It was one of the most original ways of telling a story I've ever seen.  It was very deep, sometimes you're somewhat in the dark, but all comes together at the end.  After watching the behind the scenes, I had an even deeper respect for the movie, and all that went into making it.  Quite amazed at how much research can go into an animated movie, and how some things can be so much harder to do than in a live action.  9/10

Sorry for the time in between posts. been very busy lately working on reviews for Aggrogamer and work.

Ranma 1/2

Ranma 1/2 is a story about Ranma Saotome who happened to fall into a cursed hot spring who now turns into a red haired girl when hit with cold water (Hot water transforms him back). He has come to the Tendo household with his father to marry one of the Tendo daughters. After an initial run in with the family as a girl and his father being a panda (another cursed spring), he is engaged to Akane Tendo. The rest of the series is based around Ranma's relationship with Akane and a myriad of other characters (some also cursed), included other potential suitors, both female and male, whether Ranma likes it or not. The show also features plenty of fighting in the Anything Goes Martial Arts style including figure skating, gymnastics and more.

When I first saw this series I immediately became a fan. Rumiko Takahashi's blend of comedy, romance, friendship and flat out wackiness is portrayed perfectly in this series. This is also one of the few shows that features outstanding English dubbing. Viz Video did excellent work in ensuring the voices matched the characters and it didn't suffer from constant mismatching of the voices and mouth movements. The only real downfall came in season 4 when the male version of Ranma featured an unfortunate change in voice actor.

I highly recommend this series to those that enjoy harem-style, comedy, or fighting anime genres. If you like a good mixture, this will definitely appeal to you. There are seven seasons total, an OAV collection with around 12 episodes or so, and 2 movies.

Rating: 10/10 Jusenkyo Cursed Springs

Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad

Onechanbara is one of those movies you go into just knowing it's ging to be extremely cheesy, but a ton of fun. It sure did live up to that expectation. Onechanbara is loosely based on the videogame series of the same name. It is about a young woman named Aya (whom wears only a bikini and cape) who's father was killed by her sister. While seeking revenge for her father's death, she proceeds to exterminate zombies that were originally created with Saki's blood and let loose on the world by Dr. Sugita. She travels with a portly fellow, named Katsuji, and during the first scene of the movie, she meets Reiko (A leather clad woman with a shotgun that never needs to reload). Reiko is also in search of Saki and Sugita as they were responsible for the death of her daughter.

The movie is pretty much a B-Rated Japanese film, and definitely understands itself as such. The special effects, dialogue, and acting are all exaggerated, over the top and just plain cheesy. All this combined is why the movie is so entertaining. It never once takes itself seriously and just grabs the viewer and lets them enjoy the ride. The movie is filled with blood and body parts, as they slice and shoot their way through hordes of the zombies. They throw in emotional aspects to set some back story and give the characters a little more personality, but it isn't overwhelming or unneccesary. The final battle between Aya and Saki is the perfect ending to this movie, and caps it off in a spectacularly nonsensical manner.

Anyone looking for some dumb fun with zombies getting slaughtered and girls wearing bikinis, leather, and schoolgirl outfits will find this a fun watch. If you aren't into over the top antics, I would recommend you look elsewhere.
